Evolution Of A Jig

Evolution Of A Jig

Just want to encourage and put a few ideas out there for some of you guys who like to tinker with your molds. If you think long and hard about why and what you want the end result to be, you can usually achieve it. Proceed slowly, and think, think, think about what you are doing. A small mistake, can usually be repaired with a little JB Weld. A large one maybe. Ruin it, and for less than $40.00 it can be replaced. It is much cheaper than having a custom mold built and you may turn out to have something that is very different and special. I have quite a few molds and most of them have been modified in some way or another. I like to think that I have improved on and made them better. This one has seen my most extensive mold modifications as of yet. All these modifications were done freehand using a dremel with its assorted bits and cutters.
Anyone else like to share how he or she have modified and or butchered their molds?
John

Bondo jig mold and results

Bondo jig mold and results

I saw a tutorial on using bondo to make a mold for jigs and, of-course had to try it. ( don't remember who did it but thank you!) I am impressed at how well the stuff holds up to heat. Anyway, the jig weighs 3 ounces with a 7/0 hook.

An attempt at making something similiar to the Lazy Ike

An attempt at making something similiar to the Lazy Ike

This attempt at making the Lazy Ike was made by modifying a 3/4 ounce Do-It spinnerbait mold to accept the blade. The blade and hook are pinned together with a brass pin before being inserted in the mold. I drilled a 1/8 inch hole in the blade directly in front of the pin so that the molten lead would go through the blade and anchor it securely inside the head. (I don't think it will come apart)The hooks are spinnerbait hooks, front hook is a 5/0 rear is a 3/0 They are connected by 17lb test Suffix Line. I poured three of them this morning. One with a concave facing blade and one with a convex facing blade. Also one with a painted blade. Can't wait to get them in the water to see how or if they will wiggle, waggle, rock and roll!
