Have you ever tried to break apart a glue joint? As long as you don't squeeze out too much glue, the wood will fracture first. 

At least I hope so, I've tried this concept this year too!

The joint is pretty strong. I used tite bond wood glue. I may never fish these. I glued the wood together for another project and these were cut from some of the scrap pieces.
