Black Nickel

Recommended Posts

We have had the best luck with buzz-baits on clear water when we use a black sharpie to color most of the blade with a very streaky "paint job" much of the shiny blade below shines through and the Bass seem to home in better on the strike. Several of us have been doing this for awhile and the hook up ratio is much better even without trailer hooks.

I wanted to apply this technique to spinner baits but the chrome blades don't hold the ink very well. I found some Black Nickel blades and have modified some spinner baits with them but it is not really spinnerbait season here now.

OTHER than night fishing, has anyone used these blades on a spinner? If so has it worked for you?

I love black nickel blades, I'd use them a lot more if I could get them at a good price. I only use them in clear water on sunny days when fish are spooky, that is when they really work well but another situation I found is on overcast days in clear water but that is where the price comes in to play, I use polished brass or gold blades for overcast days as they work and are much cheaper but make no mistake, the black nicel is a great blade in clear water.

Thanks, Smalljaw

I am eager to try them but the bass are still deep and suspended here. What color skirts are you using.

All the spinnerbaits I've made that sport black nickel blades have translucent color skirts on them, one pattern in particular that is an absolute killer that I use most of the time is clear with holographic flake and pearl white, that skirt color on a 1/2oz spinnerbait with black nickel blades gets destroyed by smallies and largemouth alike, it is one of the rare patterns I've found that both species of bass hit really hard. I know there are a lot of different spinnerbaits that work on both but where I fish the largemouth just seem to come up from behind and just take the spinnerbait while smallie come full speed from the side and just about rip the rod from your hands but that black nicel blade and translucent skirt pattern eally gets the largemouth to hit it really hard too.
