Alternatives To Plastisol?

Recommended Posts

Hello all. First off - Great forum!! Alot of good help to be found on here. Second - Sorry for my english - from Denmark ;)

I'm thinking about starting to learn about the softbait hand pouring techniques. And i have read alot of threads on this forum and seen a lot of videos on how to do this and know that there are several things to always have in mind when dealing with hot liquid plastic.

But My problem is that i can't seem to find ANYONE in Denmark that sells Plastisol. I have mailed a lot of companies, but they all said that they don't use it or don't know what it is. So i'm thinking...are there any other Names for plastisol? Maybe another brand?

I now that i can order this from alot of internet shops but it's quite expensive to have them ship 1 or 5 gallons to Denmark plus it might get even more expensive when it reaches Denmark because of Customs and Import duties. and i don't even know if it is legal to ship something like liquid plastic to Denmark... So i really hope you guys can help me :)

The Best Regards - Anders W

If I were you I would buy runners from carolinamike. Runners are the extra plastic left over from each pour. They will be solid, cheap, and with color and flake so you don't have to buy that stuff also. Good for practicing also. If you are doing big hairs you can pour them with a pyrex or glass measuring cup. gloves and a microwave

It doesn't Sound like the Way i want to do it...doesn't want the Quick easy solution. Wanna experiment with colours...flakes...molds and so on. But thx for the tip.

I was actually hoping that i wouldn't have to order this from the internet because of the shipping costs.

Is there no other name for this plastisol or maybe something else, that reacts the same Way When heated?

I would buy them if I had no experience pouring plastic and wanted to practice.

Andy1976, are you serious? You would buy runners in the US to ship them to Europe? C'mon, really?

Anders, before ordering you have to find out more about the import restrictions you mentioned!

Relax I don't see you offering a better suggestion. We have very cheap international flat drags shipping and I have a few friends who have started this way. Obviously if you find a local plastic dealer you are way better off.

Why should i tell him to buy somewhere in europe if he is not even sure it would be legal to do so (importing plastisol)? One step after another...

I do think buying runners and ship them to europe (even in a flat rate box) would not be the number one choice for him and shipping would cost more than the runners themselves. Anyway, i did not mean to offend you

There are shops in germany and the netherlands you could ask for shipping rates to denmark.

No there are no other names than Plastisol (soft PVC) and no material that reacts the same way this does. There are differnt 2k-silicones you could try but it's not the same stuff.

Yes these infos are a little older but still useful

.

Some new info about these shops:

HT-Baits only rarely sells plastic... most of the time they don't have any.

Lureparts.nl is good, but has a fiew colors and you have to check the site every now then for updates.

Pear Kunstaas is out of the softplastic-business for some time now (a year)!

I am just guessing that you have never poured soft baits before, if you have please disregard what I am going to say.

You can get a good feel for how your going to like it by making a mold and melting down a cup or two of old worms you already have lying around or bargain bin worms I wouldn't worry about color  just throw whatever chewed up bottom of your tackle box worms you can find in a pyrex cup and put them in an old microwave (outdoors of course).

You will probably end up with some brownish baits , a clean tackle box.

If your dead set on jumping in head first try this link http://ispikeit.com/Store/c-35-lureworks-lure-making-materials.aspx

Do a search for Paul Adams fishing blog he is in the UK and I just saw that he has a link on his blog for plastisol and the associated components that might help you. He also has a youtube channel with some creative bait making projects.

The name is Lure Factors

Yup. Ship it stiff.. I refuse to put plastic in a bag.

Well I'm lost on that one.  How would you ship it stiff?  Are you talking about actually making blocks of colors, then shipping them that way?  That, in essence, would pretty much be the same as runners, right?

I'm probably way off base here.  Wouldn't be the first time.  LOL

Anyway, my :twocents: about liquid plastisol........

I wish I had a dollar for every hour I spent trying to figure out the formulation of it.  There is no other plastic formula that will react the way it does, and I really have no clue what's in it to make a soft bait.......other than hardener, softener, and stabilizer, of course.  And even then, what are those made of??  LOL

Those companies that actually MAKE the plastisol have always been very hush-hush about the product, and understandably so. Could you imagine how flooded the market would be if we all knew how to make it?  Then again, if we did, a pack of Senkos would probably cost a nickel.  :D

In the end, I gave up researching it and just figured you need to be a chemist (or at least have a chemist's mind) to produce the stuff..........and I'm a far cry from that!

No, Making Ingots of Clear, no color, I can heat it with my new system just hot enough to make it a solid. This way it isnt overheated prior to customer. Customer heats to 350 add color etc. Was just a thought, I had seen were Edgecrusher or someone before had talked about having it cooked, as shipping liquids international is obviously a PITA. And I could fit more lbs of plastic in a flat rate without the extra packing materials. You would literrally get about 19.5lbs of plastic in a flat rate. Vs about 18 with shipping it in a bag and additional container. Like I said was a thought.
