Collins Custom Mold ?

Recommended Posts

I recenty purchased a collins-cnc-works spinnerbait mold off E-bay. It's a 5/8, 3/4 and 1oz model. Nice mold but, once you set the wire and hook in the proper area in the mold it lines up with the weakest part of the pour. It's a hidden head mold and the area you would slide the skirt on is the thinest part of the lead head. The problem is it's also the hinge betwwen the hook and wire. After pouring you can bend the head and the hidden weight left and right. After pouring about 20 of each size I realized that I could fix this by dropping a 4p finish nail in the mold with the wire and hook to help support this weak area. The pours are fine. Has anyone ever poured hidden weight spinnerbait heads. A little more thinking should have gone into this mold.

I have heard a lot of the molds being sold on ebay from all mold makers are ones that were returned or didn't work well, I don't know how true this is but I heard this from soft plastic guys as well as guys using Collins lead molds. If the 4P nail works that is great but maybe you can try making the lead a little harder, adding some antimony or something to stiffen it up a bit or maybe make the hook leg part of the wire form a little longer or shorter to make sure it is something solid instead of a hinge at that spot.

I bought the fish jig mold from Shawn Collins on EBAY and it looks really nice to me.

I havent had a chance to use it yet but another forum member recommended it to me.

This is a 10oz,12oz,16oz fish jig (think butterfly style) mold.

I don't think Shawn is selling returned molds but rather than deal with the custom stuff and customers is selling some on EBAY as an easier way to sell some of his work.

I have bought several EBAY molds. Only had one I didn't like and that was my fault for not seeing what was clearly modfied in their picture. Thankfully that was a cheap mold.

If I bought a mold that I didn't like such as the hidden weight spinnerbait mold I would be sure to contact Him through EBAY or Email and let him know the issues you are having. Maybe he can fix it for you or something.

At a minimum he will know he needs to modify his design.

Also harder lead may help you as well. Though I will admit I never have made spinnerbaits.

I failed to mention that I only use soft clean lead with on additives. After pouring you try to separate the mold and the head sticks to one side and the hidden weight sticks to the other. I know I can stop this with a little mold release but this is not a do-it mold it's a Collins. Cadman, smalljaw what can I add to harden my lead ? I never had to go the other way. I use nice clean pure lead and it pours great. Smalljaw what is antimony ? Thanks guy's for the replies.
