Favorite Football Jig Hook

Recommended Posts

I been building jigs for a few months and I have learned a lot by reading this site. I have learned to tie my own skirts and I am addicted to making my own jigs.

I have the do it mold fbw- 4-af. I am wanting to make sure I build a jig that will have a good hook up ratio. I have been building these with a 5/0 mustad 46 but the hook seems too light and too small. I have not got a chance to fish these so I am not for sure.

What is everyone's favorite hook and size to go in the 1/2 oz and 3/4 oz? I want to make sure I have a hook that will give me the best hook up ratio.

Welcome to Tackle Underground. I don't know what fish you are targeting but that mold takes an aberdeen hook. With that said, I personally wouldn't use an aberdeen hook for bass fishing. However I do know that they make a 575H hook, which is the heavier version of the 575. I couldn't tell you if the 575H fits in that mold. Out of curiosity, what is a Mustad 46 hook? If you are looking for a stronger hook I would go with a different mold like a FBB-4H-AFM or a FBB-3M-AFM, much more verstile mold and hook options. Just my opinion

Cadman,

Can you expand on why you personally wouldn't use an Aberdeen hook for bass fishing?  I have the FBW-4-AF mold as well as the FBB-4H-AFM.  I respect your option and the knowledge that you share with this board.  I would like to try and understand your thought process on this type hook?

Thanks

This is a great hook for that mold. Very hard to turn the point. Eagle Claw L2706BP Jig Hook.

Soopd now that you clarified the hook. I would like to rephrase my statement. I don't want to come across as a know-it all or an arrogant person. But if you were to tell me that you wanted to use an EC 570,575 or a Mustad 32756 hook then I would say that those hooks are too weak for bass fishing. Reason being is I have fished those hooks I have mentioned, and I used them for river fishing for walleye. The aberdeen hooks are made to bend when they are hooked on a picee of wood or caught in rocks, so then you can pull the jig through so you don't lose it. You can physically bend and rebend the 570's many times and they don't break. However they do bend out and straighten. So for that reason I would not use the hooks I mentioned for bass. I personally believe that you should have a stronger hook for bass fishing. Now the 32746 hook is a stouter hook. The 4/0 is around .044 thk diameter, plus they are a premium hook. This hook I would definitely use, because taking this hook in my hand I can feel that you can not bend this hook out real easily. I can't comment on the EC L2706BP, because I have never used them. I do want to clarify that yes you can use any hook to catch a fish and yes you can catch a bass on an aberdeen hook, however I wouldn't use it at all as my go to hook on a jig, because I don't have the confidence in that hook to hold a bass. This is just again personal opinion. Edited by cadman

Cadman,

Thanks for the explanation. That make perfect sense  I certainly hope that my request for clarification didn't imply that I thought you were coming of as a know-it all or arrogant person.  If it did I apologize as that was not my intent. I thought maybe it had to do with the angle of the hook eye.

No problem and no harm done. I didn't take any offense, I just don't want people to think that I have all the answers, and my way is correct. Anytime I comment on someones thread or post, it is about things that I've encountered in my travels. There are a lot of things I don't know and I learn from others as well. We're here to help each other learn and to hopefully give each other insight from things that we have come across so it makes it easier for others.

Thanks for all the replies. When I first started fishing jigs I gained a lot of confidence in gamblers football jig. I found some for $1.00 each (skirts included) and I bought 100. I am now down to only a couple. I believe it has a gamagatsu extra wide gap.

These jigs with the 90 degree bend just don't look right to me because of what I have been fishing. This mold was given to me from a friend so I am just learning. Any suggestions from anyone is always appreciated. Thanks again.

I agree with Cadman as he and I have very similar style when it comes to fishing and with football jigs I prefer a 60 degree hook because I want to drag the jig rather than lift it. I do use small aberdeen hooks for bass fishing but I use them for very specific conditions like using them on small jig heads and tying hair to them for winter time smallmouths and the reason is the jigs aren't going into heavy cover and the smallies want a small profile for the most part and bite light in cold water but other than that I use a standard wire hook.

I have the FBB-38 mold, and use the 32746 hooks, 3/0 and 4/0.  I had to make the hook slot a little larger to accept the 4/0, but it wasn't that difficult.

I use my football jigs with hula grubs almost exclusively, the 3/0 for the 4", and the 4/0 for the 5".

The hooks are very strong and don't bend out on the hookset, like the 756 hooks did.
