Base Coat Question

Recommended Posts

For my base coat i'm using a createx opaque, or an apple barrel white. Is it going to hurt to spray a thicker first coat that basically covers the entire bait and let it drip a little? I put a picture of one where I did a real thin coat, where I would have to do 3 or 4 to get it completely white VS just one heavier coat. Thanks

I spray multiple color base coats but I do it with a particular paint - Polytranspar Superhide White.  It's an acrylic with additives that cause it to dry much quicker than normal airbrush paint and it has lots of pigment to cover quickly.  It dries to a hard smooth surface in a few seconds under a hair dryer and I've never had a problem with later finish coats.  Apple Barrel white also has lots of pigment and works well but it has a more "pebbly" surface when dry due to its larger paint particles.  I dry the paint thoroughly with a hair dryer between shots (15-45 seconds) and have never had an issue with either paint.

If you go to taxidermy.net, it is a "gateway" to various taxidermy suppliers including Mckenzie.  That's where I get mine 'cause it's only a few miles down the road from me, but I'm sure there are other sources out there on the internet somewhere.
