Foiling Technique

Recommended Posts

This is a Lucky Craft Pointer 100.  Does anybody know how to recreate these foil scales?  I've seen the techniques involving imprinting a knurled or other pattern on the foil and then applying the foil to the lure, but I think this particular technique is interesting because you could use it to create the effect of a baitfish that has had scales knocked off of it.  I've always had some of my best success with crankbaits and jerkbaits with lures that were scratched and scuffed up from catching fish.

Ben's right, alot of lure manufactures make things for just themselves and put a patent on it. I experienced this with roostertail. I spoke to them on the phone because I was looking for a particular color and size. They helped me but because it was one of their exclusive colors it wasn't on their website and could only be found in certain stores. The lady finally helped me locate them but like I said they were hard to get and when I found them I took everyone they had.

I have a couple of LC Pointers in that American Shad color that have caught A LOT of fish and have thought about ways to replicate those scales to no avail. If you look close (on my LC's anyway) the scales actually overlap too. So the scales themselves as well as the method they lay them down are both a mystery.

You used to could get them from Lucky Craft Japan. I ordered a couple of packs, a few years ago, but it was out of the last few they sold. I got 2 packs of silver holographic & 1 pack of purple holographic. I have used all of the silver & have just a few of the purple scales left. They no longer sell them to the public, that I am aware of!

I knew I had seen those about 3 years ago on a Japan website.

I guess they think that if they don't sell those foils, that you will buy the Lucky Craft baits. I own a few Lucky Crafts, but they are other types of baits that I like those foiled scales on them. I painted me up enough to last me a while, but it would be nice to add those to a few baits every now and then.

I went out to the shop & got the box that they came in & I ordered them from Ichiban Tackle in Japan. They are still showing 1mm gold for sale. I ordered the 3mm scales. Here is the purple ones I have left. I will eventually use them, but trying to make them last a while, since I know I can't get any more!!
