Best Starter Jig Tying Vise

I am looking something for a good price that is quality made a durable
that will be good for tying of skirts to jigs....so something sturdy. 
Mostly use for jigs 3/8 to 1 oz.

Check out both Cabela's and Bass Pro Shops.  They both should have cheap, sturdy vises.  I bought mine from one of them (can't remember which)  many years ago and it's held up find.  I did have to super glue the nuts/knobs on the ends of the rods they use.  That's my only complaint.  But I'm a hobby tier, not a pro.

The Anvil Apex is your best bet, it takes hooks up to 7/0 and that is what you need. I have a Griffin Odyssey spider and it is awesome, lifetime warranty, made in U.S.A. and mostly metal parts and it is a true rotary vise but it only holds up to a 4/0 heavy hook, 5/0 standard wire. I only need that is my larger jigs are wire tied so I don't need a vise for those, anyway check those 2 out, both are good and will be great starter ones, you can always upgrade if you feel the need.

I will only be wire tying. Smalljaw...do you thread tie your jigs as well as wire tue.

I have the same vice smalljaw has, the Griffen Oddysey. If you are going to tie with thread then you need a vice, if you are wire tying a bass jig with copper wire and a silicone skirt, you can tie all of that in your hand. No need for a vice.

That seems like tying it in your hand would be hard. What do you guys use the vise for then...thread? What do you use the thread for....just the rubber skirts?

Yes I use the vice for tying with thread. At one time I tied all my bass jigs with thread. Then as time went on I experimented with tying with wire and found it held silicone skirting material just as well as thread, and also it was a lot faster. Time is money for me. Also there is a tutorial I put out on TU on how I hand tie with wire. If you can't fine it PM me your e-mail and I will send it to you. You also have a PM from me.

I do a lot of tying with thread, as Cadman told you, wire tying holds the material just as good and it is a lot faster but on smaller finesse jigs and hair jigs, I use thread, Danville flat waxed nylon in 140 and 210 denier.

I have vises older than some of the folks on here . If you want to be frugal just get an old  Thompson F or E vise . Hold anything ya want . Ya can pick them up for under 20 bucks shipped . I've got a new one on the shelf . After all this time I haven't worn out the other 2 .

I use an Orvis  Dan Vice ($80) for thread tying and a regular 4" bench vice ($20) for wire tying.

I use an apex Anvil and a simple $15-20 vice. the Apex is by far one of the better vices in that ($130-$150 range) it does rotate and can take a good size hook (I think up to 7/0) I am a total beginner and am self taught on something and this kind of vice helps me a ton. I do not require a better vice in a higher price range as I do not tie so many of anything...good luck brother

I have the Anvil Apex also. Cam or jaw is wearing out after many 1000's of hooks from #8 to 8/0. E-mailed them and they said they sold that model to another company and would send them my wish for replacement parts......never hear back. 

 

Hooks/jigs keep coming unclamped while tying. They are off my buying list now, even though I liked it while it worked.
