Craft Or Deer

Recommended Posts

I have just begun tying some jigs and plan to tie some 1/2 oz Spire Point jigs

These will be used in freshwater bass fishing with a 3 or 3.5 inch paddle tail grub and need to be tied with either bucktail or craft hair in white and gray/white.

I have only tied a couple jigs with bucktail and never with craft hair.  Any pros and cons for these choices would be very welcome.  Thanks

Craft fur does have a lot of action and is very fluid in movement and it is easier to tie but I wouldn't say easier to work with. Because you are making bass jigs you are going to use the longest fur, you cut it off right at the fabric it is on and before you tie you need to get rid of the "under fur", this is the small fibers not useable and are about an inch long. I mention this as a lot of guys don't like pulling the under fur out before tying it in. I like buck tail for cold water, once the water drops in to the 50s bot craft fur and buck tail work well, when it gets into the 40s the craft fur is too much action and buck tail gets better. I think the fact that you are using a trailer with these means you can use any hair, if you want the trailer to be the star and the hair to add bulk then go with the buck tail, craft fur will really move and with the trailer it may be too much action.
