Jig Hooks...

Recommended Posts

I've noticed that Eagle Claw is coming out or has come out with a lot of new jig hooks.  Does anyone have any info about using EC jig hooks instead of Mustad?

For instance, I've got a mold that used the Mustad 32786 BLN hook and would like to find something that's a little less expensive to use.  Will the Eagle Claw L730 work?

I had a catalog that had some conversion charts but my ever efficient wife threw the catalog away once it left my hands.

Thanks.

Eagle Claw has really stepped up to the plate lately.  I'm told their sharpness coefficient is the same as Gammy's in their ultra sharp line.  I'm sure someone on here has a comp chart but remember to always check the actual design out on EC's website to make sure it's what you want.

Yes, EC has stepped up their game in the last two years, and they are giving Mustad a run for their money. The correct number for your Mustad 32786 in a EC is L786BP. The BP stands for black platinum. I can tell you this, myself, Smalljaw and few others have been using these hooks from their inception on the market. They are outstanding hooks, and they match their Mustad counterpart exactly. EC also has other hooks that you can match up to Mustads. Final thing on the EC hooks and that is they are less expensive than Mustads, and EC's are Made in the USA.

My first hook was the 111BP, that is a 60 degree EWG style flipping hook and it is wicked sharp and very strong. I liked that hook so much I decided to try the 2798BP which is a 60 degree flat eye hook that I use for Eakins jigs and shaky heads, I sent over 100 heads out to guys I know to try out and I never told them what hook it was, I just told them that I was trying a new hook, let me know. I never got any bad feedback and fishing them myself I had to pinch myself to believe what I was seeing, an Eagle Claw hook that was, in my opinion, shaper and just as strong as Mustad for 1/2 the price. I have since added the 2706, the 786, the 3886, and the L570BP, the last one is tricky. They make a 570 which is a standard 90 degree Aberdeen hook but then the make a 570 BP which is the 570 with the black platinum finish but then there is an L570BP, the "L" marks it as a laser sharp model and that is what you want, you'll know you got the right one as it is more than double the price of the other 2.  Some will say Trokar or Owner or Gamakatsu but truth be told, those hooks are different, they have cutting points, Mustad, Eagle Claw, and VMC have needle points that penetrate and the new EC are as good as it gets, so fear not, give them a shot and I'm sure you'll be happy especially when you see how well they perform for what you paid!!

Are the L570BP hooks a bit stronger than the standard 570 hooks?

They are slightly stronger but not by much. They are what is called an Aberdeen hook, almost all 90 degree jig hooks fall into that category and what that means is they are tempered in a way that allows the hook to bend up straight to free from snags and then be bent back to original shape without breaking. I use them along with the Matzuo Sickle hooks for small hair jigs and I can tell you that with the right rod and line you won't have to worry about losing fish because the hook bends. I have landed 5 lb smallmouth with a 3/32oz jig with a size 2 570 hook and I got an email last year of a guy that got a 7lb fish on one of my hair jigs, they do bend easily but they are needle sharp and the light wire allows them to penetrate with very little effort. The only hook that I use in the 90 degree type that is really strong is the Owner 5313 short shank extra strong jig hook, you only need to take a small needle file and open up the hook slot a tiny bit and they will fit but you won't be able to go up in size, if a cavity calls for a size 1 hook then that is what you use unless you really modify the mold and then the other hooks won't fit. Aberdeen hooks are fine, the problem is guys try to use the smaller size ones like 2/0 and smaller with 20lb braid with medium heavy rods and that isn't going to work, that is where the Owner hook comes in.

A good rule of thumb is light wire hooks need lighter line, and lighter action rods.

The trade off for easy penetration of a light wire hook is strength...you can't horse the fish, you have to play it.

I do use lighter wire hooks in some of my football jigs, 14oz-3/8oz, with 12lb fluoro, but that is because I fish hula grugs in rocky lakes, and want to get them back when they snag.

what is the consensus on L570BP vs. mustad 32833 ???

Completely different hook, the 32833 is a steelhead hook and is 2X strong while the 570 is an Aberdeen hook. The 32833 isn't going to bend but if it did it would break but any mold using the 570 would need to be modified to accept the 32833. If I needed a strong 90 degree jig hook that wasn't an Aberdeen model, I'd go with the Owner 5313, that hook is strong and you only need to file the hook slot on most molds for it to fit.

Anyone have a inexpensive source for jig hooks?  I know about Capt. Hooks and all the usual suspects.  So far the best prices I've found have been at Barlow's.

It depends on the hooks, for Owners I found Lure Parts Online has the best price but for others I usually go Captain hooks or Barlows. For the L570BP you have to use Captain hooks, Barlows carries the 570 B which isn't the same hook, not bad but it isn't the same and you'll notice that the 100 ct price for one is a little over 3 bucks while the other is almost 9. Also ask if you can get a quantity discount, LPO helped me out because I was able to get a better price by the 1000 ct. and you'd be surprised at how many places will give you a better deal like that.

I mainly deal with three companies for hooks. Like Smalljaw mentioned, Lure Parts On line definitely for Owner hooks. They will work with you on price and shipping. Capt. Hooks and Shorty's Hooks. If you are buying quantities of 1000 hooks at a time, I don't know why anyone would go anywhere else except Shorty's. They usually have everyone's price beat. Also look into Do-It Molds. They give discounts on 10 packs of the same hook, and their shipping price is reasonable. Most of the other places I've dealt with charge way too much for shipping small packages and it takes sometimes 5-6 days to receive from date of order. I never have that problem with LPO. Call order in, package arrives in two days. Can't beat that for service.

There are a lot of hooks that can be used in place of the ones you listed, for the 630/635 there is the Gamakatsu 2894, the Trokar TK840 as well as a few others, it all depends on the size of the hook. The same deal for the 410, the Owner 5304 in my favorite and if the bend isn't working for you then the 5304. I've been making small finesse football heads with a size #1 Owner 5304, what a killer finesse jig, it is great to drag over shallow rock flats.

Thought the only way you could order from Shorty's was if you had

  • State sales tax number
  • Federal tax id number
  • Business license number
  • 637 tax exemption number

I'm wondering the same thing.  Guess I'll have to contact them.  I need a bunch of hooks and even adding the 10% excise tax to the Shorty's price could save me a bunch of money.
