Can C-Clamps Damage Molds?

Recommended Posts

C-Clamps work fine, but I have found I like the short cheap screw type bar clamps from Horrible Fright.  I have a dozen of them hanging over my pouring bench.  http://www.harborfreight.com/6-inch-bar-clamp-96210.html  I take the plastic protectors off, and save them in a work bench drawer for when I use them for other things.

I also have other stuff I have tried to varying degrees of success from home made vises to bench mounted wood workers vises.

Horrible Fright lol! That is funny that you mention those clamps because I was going to buy them. The first clamps I bought where from Harbor Freight.

They sucked because I couldn't squeeze them down hard enough so when I injected my mold plastic oozed out the sides. The cool thing was I took them back the next day and they gave me my money back and I saw the clamps you use Bob. I was going to get them but then I thought they might suck too because they are from Harbor freight. So instead I bought these clamps from Home Depot.

I think I might just buy the Harbor Freight clamps anyway because they are cheap and I see that they will let me clamp more molds together.

In short no, but in the long yes, if your mold is not aligned properly, if it is over-heated or a bur was present then yes you could have a problem, it's all about moderation, your understanding of too tight may not be the same for others, crank a clamp down on a mold that may be thin in a certain area well then you get the picture!
