rockfish baits

Recommended Posts

I dont know if anyone on here pours soft plastics for rockfishing on the west coast but if you do have some killer rockfish baits would you mind giving me some tips. I have made a cupple of scampi and grub molds and have a cupple of good colors for it but I would like to make some more custom baits. I would also like to make some halibit baits.

I fish out of Santa Cruz, we use motor oil or rootbeer mostly, but black baits as well as white work well here. I like big zipper style grubs and U-Tail type worms. Those toothy fish tear up the baits quick. Since the regulations got all messed up here, we mostly fish halibut now. White baits seem to get the most hits. Bigger is better for these guys. I use 25lb test and a 3/0 offset hook for saltwater stuff, carolina rig with a 2oz weight.

yeah I fish santa cruz too. I fish off of a kayak so I like to launch out of davenport landing. if its too bumpy there I go to santa cruz harbor. My favrotes are green cartroce grubs for rockfish/lingcod and i have yet to catch a halibit thow I have fished for them alot I mostly use live bait or squid for that thow.

Hey goldenarrow! Glad I bumped into you here! I have made a number of scampi and my own secret combo fishtrap/curly tail. I mostly make rootbeer colors but I have a few reds that I can't wait to try out once the season opens. If you need any help just let me know. I am not the artist that most of the guys here are but hopefully the rockfish don't mind :-)

dude another yakker! nice. What kinda boat you got? I fished La Jolla today slow here. Furthest north i will probly yak this year is newport bass tournament. Dana point and newport then i stay in san diego.

Anyways baits. I have made like a creature bait but big size with large scampie type body so i can put on a 2 z or 3 oz lead head if i need. Just mix up baits, its fun and they work.

Yep Green OK Prowler here.

Lets get together as soon as the season opens, promethean_spark from my board poars lead for jig heads and diamond jigs. He is an avid groundfisher as well.

If I am not mistaken the season opens south of Big Sur in 120'+ pretty soon, I might have to make a run down there to test out my baits.

Siebler, I would stay south if I was in your shoes as well. I went Sturgeon fishing yesterday, it was about 40 degrees and the wind was howling between 10-15 mph. Check it viewtopic.php?t=159

I get jealous when I see you guys catching all those yellow tail in shorts! :?
