Do those ribs in the bill affect the action? The bait looks awesome by the way!!!

  4. Best finish coat to use over CS vinyl paint

Thanks for all your recommendations guys. I think I might try some D2t, and then go from there.
  5. I recall reading certain colors signified they were a better grade and suitable for production. Colors were Green, Red & Blue: Does anyone know which color was considered the best? Color coding is not done any more as they are all painted black.

Yes I was thinking injection. Open pour should be a breeze...
  7. FIELD TESTING CRANKBAITS

I don’t know how BentonB does his, but as a hobby builder I keep a library of body and lip templates and a notebook recording measurements, weights of components, wood type and coating details on each new crankbait design I do. That lets me reproduce a successful crankbait and gives me a base line of detail from which to experiment to improve a design. If I want to cook up a batch I made 5 years ago, I just refer to my recipe instead of my faulty memory (which NEVER works).
  8. FIELD TESTING CRANKBAITS

Ya, I second the after hours. I live at an apartment complex, with a pool, and they let me test during the summer. I often go out when no one is there and within minutes there is a dozen people, kids to old timers like me, all wanting to see what that crazy guy is doing "fishing in the pool". Ugggggg
  9. FIELD TESTING CRANKBAITS

Find a local YMCA with a director who fishes, and ask to use their pool for testing after hours, in exchange for lures.

One place.. Hot water discharges. Fertilizer plants, nuclear plants, paper mills. Etc.

BentonB.......you can build them without having to tune them? Not saying it's not possible but I haven't been able to. The only reason I bring it up is I hate freezing my tail off in the winter months tuning 100's of cranks. If I could get out of it I would sure like to.
  14. Barrel twist wire screw eye

Lurch I believe there is a video on youtube that Lordship lures does that shows the process in detail on a large surf plug...hope it helps.
  15. Hook Manufacturing?

Guess I was late on my post what's a couple of years
  16. Hook Manufacturing?

Why but out all the $$ and time just buy in bulk

That's a nice looking master! As for the action you can expect from a swimbait's tail, I use the crankbait shape analogy when I'm picking a tail shape. Narrower, flatter tails have a tighter, more subtle wiggle. Rounder tails have a wider side to side action. And the closer to 90 degrees the angle of the tail to the bait's backbone, the more water resistance and wiggle.

    Great idea!

Use 2-3 coats of CS seal coat if you're looking for a spray able.easy to apply coat of protection. I agree w/ APdriver 100% that no top coat, epoxy or otherwise will last forever . I want to try Bob Smiths.brush on - 30 minute epoxy before placing the lead baits on a turning wheel to dry evenly.

Will I need to turn dry with Mcu's and/or d2t; or just hang dry on a drying rack? I'm going to stick with vinyl paint for its durability. Wires wear out on spinnerbaits/buzzbaits before paint job. I'm usually able to re-tie new skirts a time or two before bait becomes unusable. As for jigs, the finish coat goes pretty quick with can one part.
  23. FIELD TESTING CRANKBAITS

If you are going to use a pool to test lures, you could hang paper clips or some wire on the split rings instead of hooks. If you have a good scale that weighs fractions of an ounce, you could exactly match the weights of the hooks.

Any topcoat will scratch, marr, or otherwise show use when pulled over rock during a days fishing. Not a topcoat or paint out there that will stay pristine under those conditions. That said, you may be able to find something that will works better than vinyl. Most of the good jig producers around use powder paint to paint their jigs...no topcoat required. Once you bake it, it’s hard as a witches heart. Very cost effective as you can paint many, many jigs with a pound of powder. Some guys even use it to paint their spinnerbaits. A little more difficult as the wire gets in the way but using a brush tap method you can get some great results. If you add eyes, you’ll want to topcoat with a clear to keep the eyes on. Several good Moisture Cure Urethanes (MCU’s) out there for this. Also the clear two part epoxies like the Devcon 2 Ton. You’ll have to find what works for you. Personally, I prefer the MCU’s for the working time. KBS Diamond Clear is a really nice MCU. Also for spinnerbaits that you are going to topcoat, you can get some nice results using an airbrush with Createx water based paints then top coated with MCU or epoxy. I’ll try to post a photo or two to show an example.
