LOZ Posted March 19, 2008 Report Share Posted March 19, 2008 I've been making some swimbaits, and now that I've kinda gotten the hang of it I'm wanting to get more detailed. I've been thinking of what to use as dorsal fin/tail material and I think deer hair might work pretty well. Problem is, I can't find any in black or dark. sagacious Posted March 19, 2008 Report Share Posted March 19, 2008 Save yourself a lot of work. Go to the hardware store, and get a paintbrush with brown or black bristles. You can get synthetic, or natural (hog bristles). Either will last much longer than deer hair or bucktail, and be better suited to your needs anyway. Hope this helps, good luck. BobP Posted March 19, 2008 Report Share Posted March 19, 2008 I think sagacious is right about durability and the hair I've used for tying bucktails seems too soft for the fins on a swimbait. But you can buy dyed black deer and calf tails from staminainc.com. Any aniline dye, like Rit, should be permanent if you need to dye something.
