You can lightly sand an existing paint job to promote adhesion, then cover it in a solid white or gray to mask the underlying paint scheme before you begin adding the new colors. The same applies to painting wood cranks for the first time, where you need a solid base to cover the wood grain before adding your color scheme. My favorite color basecoat paint is Polytranspar Superhide White acrylic airbrush paint. It covers quickly and is more durable than most water based airbrush paints.
