Molded Eye Masking For Repaint

Recommended Posts

I put a small piece of painter's blue masking tape over the eye and press it down with my finger, and then a toothpick, so it follows the contours of the eye, and is down tightly everywhere.

Then I use the back of an exacto knife to circle the eye at it's perimeter. That cuts the tape without cutting the lure.

Other than having a hole punch the perfect size to cut out tape disks, this is the best method I've come up with.

If you have a hole punch with a couple different sizes for holes you can punch circles out of blue painters tape and cover the eyes. Another thing that will work is liquid frisket. It's a liquid masking agent that you can paint over the eye with a brush and it dries in a minute or so. You can find it at hobby shops such as Hobby Lobby or stores that deal in arts and crafts. I've tried both and now I don't try to save the eyes. I just pop them out before painting and glue new ones back in when I'm done.

I ended up using Elmers glue over the eyes and then painted. The glue easily came off after drying. Thanks guys for your advice. I was repainting Yo-Zuri's Pin's minnows. An awesome lure for me but getting dificult to find and even more dificult to replicate. This lure is quite small and too precise for me to consistantly make.
