  2. I exclusively build bass lures and if a bass ever breaks one of my non-thru-wired balsa baits I will gratefully and cheerfully salute the beast as he swims off with half my lure in its mouth. Hundreds of crankbaits, hundreds of bass, I’m still waiting. I don’t think thru-wiring offers added strength to a lure compared to well designed and installed hardwire. But build crankbaits however you think is best for the species you target.

  3. SlowFish that is the lure I mentioned in an earlier post, thanks for sharing that. There was a video on youtube several years ago that showcased and explainted the theroy and reasoning, along with action and results. Very cool. azsouth, great work explaining how you arrived at your conclusion. Several years ago when I had the test tank I had planned on trying something like this, never got around to it, to busy I guess, but great work anyway and thanks for sharing. Dave, I think we talked about this sometime ago, I was on a Japaneese Crankbiat kick and then swithced to your Hunting theroy because it called to me. Like I said in previous post's I have had success using Vodkaman's theroy and method, which in short is making the Diving bill longer and trimming it to get the desired action. There is alot more to it but that is the skinny of it. Please correct me if I'm wrong, I've even got myself in trouble or accused of absurdity when I mentioned this, the thought of tuning your crankbaits can be a touchy subject with some builders. So in general one thing I've learned from several guys here on TU, theres a lot of information that can be applied if we are only willing to think outside the box, or try something that does not makes sense at the time. When I take a dozen or more crankbasits to the lake my fishing partner and others look at me like I'm crazy and ask why do you spend so much time tuning crankbaits? HeHe! I build my crankbaits in weights, diving bill lengths, design and other ideas for a purpose, which is build a crankbiat for each application I think I need, and to try to perfect the action to the best of my ability, which does include tuning. Which brings us to whole other subject we can discuss on another thread. It's ideas, thoughts and applied science that makes this stuff happen so once agian I tip my Hat to you guys here on TU. Rich

  4. You ever have a bass break your crankbaits I want to see a pic of the tank that did it so you better land it lol Sadly I don’t think that day will come

  5. Where actions like that really shine is for trolling lures where you don’t have the same ability to apply action on the retrieve This in my opinion is where hunters need to be marketed not the bass fishing market that is more about casting. Something to consider and maybe be a venture for something to do on the side to see how it goes. I think you have something there but you will need to apply it correctly and get it known on your own

  6. What I always find interesting when it comes to to debating the lure construction strength is most are not considering is the shear range in size/power of fish people target with lures. Most are comparing lure construction to species like bass where 10lbs is big and failing to realize this is a small fish to some who target larger species I would be choked if someone built me a lure for a tarpon trip using the same construction they used for largemouth I have had big chinook, lake trout, and pike break lures. I have had pike break hangers twisting in a net/cradle. Chinook have pulled out hangers/break hangers. I have had big Lakers crack hollow plastic plugs/crankbaits on the strike and break hangers rolling in the net Through wire is not needed for the species I just listed but construction that some are assuming is good enough will experience failure. Theses are not even true big game species either What some view unnecessary/overkill may be just what is needed for another. There is a big difference between building lures for panfish and saltwater big game species

  9. RPM - good post, yes, good description of my method. I have discussed the double lip idea with a few members so forgive me for not recalling specifics. AZSouth - the best way to manage videos is to upload onto YouTube, then use the link YouTube will give you and paste into your TU post. This way you are not using up TUs limited resources. Dave

  10. Yes I have videos, I don't know if they will download here ( I haven't tried to ) they are not the best but you can get the whole feel of how it runs for each bait.

  11. DOH! I just realized you are in Arizona too. I'm sure slow sometimes. LOL. We should hook up on the Colorado River sometime. I fish out of Fisher's Landing a lot, but I also know most of the dirt launches in stretches of river that you can't get to from there.

  12. I like it. Quite a bit different than the other idea we were talking about, and a lot easier to implement.

  13. AZSouth - the best way to think about the rules; consider the purpose posting an image. Are you trying to clarify a technique, explain a feature or some other construction OR are you just trying to get feedback on your latest paint job. I love the construction; whipping on the extra eye, very smooth. Loving the story of how you arrived at the idea and the work you did to explore the idea. I would say 'Share of the Year' and we are only in April. Carbite - I have an idea about what is happening. The lip has a different frequency to the blade. Occasionally the 'pull' of front and rear aligns causing a change in direction. I worked on this idea about 14 years ago when I built bodies with two different width lips, front and back. The idea did not work because the water flow is a single, connected phenomenon and cannot be considered as two separate systems. I have a video of two lures swimming side-by-side, the lures always swim in sync with each other. This is complex fluid dynamics, but we can see it happen. I would love to see some video of the tail spinner lure Here is the video: Dave

  14. Welcome to TU. That is a first for me as well. You will heve to have them plated. With that said, it is going to be very expensive and probably cost prohibitive in small quantities, unless you buy 10K. Also remember that the gold plating will wear off from the blades hitting it along with the clevis and the beads spinning around on the shaft.

  15. If he's actually wanting to be legit than you'll have to figure federal excise tax in too on top of everything else . There's several guys here that can explain it to you or use the search function & look it up. Most of us start out thinking that then realize how much time is involved & usually just end up making stuff for ourselves & buddys. Maybe trade some with other bait makers for stuff they make is pretty enjoyable too. If i were doing it as a kid i'd just do it on a cash basis & know who i was dealing with.

  16. Gold plated wire is a first for me. Bet it’s a bit expensive with the price of gold nowadays. Welcome to TU, by the way.

  19. I agree that it was an interesting video, and I think I may try several of my best producing commercially available stick baits in a pool someday myself. I agree also that best is in the mind of the fisherman and that fish often have a different idea. I use several of those baits myself and find that in many cases the best bait in the AM is not the best jerk in the mid day or PM. I just don't experience that one jerk action is "always" better than another. Still, my mind is open to paying more attention to the specifics of the jerk action on a given day.

  20. Rich, you did sound a bit like a grumpy old man in your initial post... but I completely agree with your sentiment. For most of my bass-sized baits (3-6") I use a twist eye from either .032" or .051" stainless wire. I haven't had any problems with any of my attachment points as of yet. Where I use through-wire most is in tiny lures. I've been making a lot of "bugs" lately, which are between 3/4" and 2." I put 1 or 2 size 12 hooks on them depending on how long they are. Most are made from a willow branch, though I just turned a few on a lathe out of redwood. While they are designed to target panfish, there's hardly a time I use them when I don't catch a few bass. My concern is that with how small they are they might bust up with a decent size bass. So far I haven't had any trouble with them. @Vodkamandoes this picture sort of describe what you are talking about? Admittedly I've just been using the standard haywire without the barrel twist, but I can certainly see how adding some barrel twists would make for a stronger bond.
