  1. Paul . A CNC lathe can be made to make lures with a round profile only such as poppers. If that's wat you are looking to make then it would be a cool tool to have around. It looks like it would be quite expensive though. If you are looking to make other shapes other than rounded what you are looking for is a CNC mill.
  2. I mixed it in with the first layer of Devcon and coated it the second time without metal flake. Thanks for the compliment. This one came with a lot of labor. I am definetely not a natural born painter. I tested them out at the local lake today. Yes on Thanksgiving! Talk about an understanding wife. She even went out there with me. I am pleased with the dive depth and they run true. I would just like a little more vibration/swimming action. They swim real tight. Any advice? Wider lip? round lip instead of a coffin?
  3. After two years of experimentation I am finally getting paint jobs I am satisfied with. Thanks again to Funny Farm and his tutorial.
  4. The eyes are made by making a round dot with black paint on white card stock. I used a nail. Once fully dry, I used a hot glue gun loaded with a clear glue stick (available at ace hardware) to create the bulge. Once they are dry I punched them out with a 1/4" hole punch. Took lots of practice but the materials are dirt cheap.
  5. Been working at this for awhile. Special thanks to Funny Farm for the expert tutorial.
  6. Looks real good to me. should be a real prize in your tackle box. It's always great to have a lure that no one else has. i hope it lands a trphy for you. My only suggestion is to wait until your girlfriend gets out of the tub next time before you test it. Nice work
  7. And welcome ... BTW.. did you mean to attach a photo of that lure?
  8. Since balsa does not absorb water and rot is it neccessary to primer it or can it just be shot with white paint first? Does anyone see a p[roblem with using thinned Devcon as the sealer/primer on balsa?
  9. It cures faster if your puddle of it is deeper. It cures by thermal/chemical reaction. The shallower you can keep it in the mixing cup...the better. Some guys also place their mixing cup on a cold surface like one of those blue ice deals as this will slow the curing as well. Also devcon can be thinned by using rubbing alcohol. Add the alcohol with an eye dropper though as a few drops goes a long way and you dont want it too runny.
  10. I have a few questions about ballast weighting for you pros. Am I right to assume that the ballast should be as close to the front of the lure as possible as to not effect the lure motion. For instance, if I am designing a floating stick bait similar to the typical floating rapala, shouldn't my ballast be directly behind the lip and as far down to the belly as possible? Also does the ballast weight actually help the lure stay in position while it is swimming. For instance, if the above type of lure was trolled can a heavier ballast weight help the lure from rolling?
  11. I make floats but I make the slip bobber style. Is this what you are interested in? If so email me and Ill send you pics and answer any questions.
  12. Its kinda of dual purpose as the vices are strong enough to hold lures and I gave it enough clearance. The vices are 1.5" apart on center but they are removable so that I can do bigger lures as well. Thanks for the kind comments.
  13. Check out the photos. I had to make 40 holders made from 1/2" dowel rod. I fashioned them after a fly tying vise.
  14. I use liquid masking. It is avaiable through Micro-mark. Comes off pretty easy and protects well. Flawless detail edges...no seepage
  15. Anyone else have problems using the Orange Pro-tec powder? The stuff I have either leaves clumps on the lead head, burns and discolors, or doesn't completely melt. The margin for error in the amount of heat seems to be non-existant. I use about 6 of their other colors and have none of these problems.
  16. I was wondering if any of you have tried this product available through Cabelas. It looks like they would be a good idea since it takes alot of effort to hand craft a bait. http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/product/standard-item.jhtml?id=0017232316517a&navAction=push&navCount=3&indexId=cat190001&podId=0017232&catalogCode=ID&parentId=cat190001&parentType=index&rid=&_DARGS=%2Fcabelas%2Fen%2Fcommon%2Fcatalog%2Fitem-link.jhtml.1_A&_DAV=MainCatcat20166&hasJS=true
