  1. I want to get some sort of scale make more consistent baits . Do any of you use one ? If so where did you get it ? I have seen a few but anything that is some what accurate is priced more than I want to pay . I would like to spend less than 100 but 50 sounds more like it .
  2. All the baits that I have ever had roll on me make a wide roll and come to the surface . The baits I have now seem to stay at the same running depth and then continue like the picture above . I think these are the going to be a great bait when the lake I plan to use them in gets the right set of conditions going on . I will let you know haw it goes . I think these baits might fall under a new catagorey "acrobat " . I have seen shad spiral when they are on their deathbed so I think this should be a good thing . On a side note I am some what new to crank making so please fill me in on how not to have a bait roll . I have made 20 or so before and have not had this problem before . If this turns out to be a good thing I would like to know how to repeat it .
  3. I can't say that I have ever seen a store bought crank hunt and none of my homemade ones have hunted yet . I just tuned some new baits and I think I have done it . While they don't dive as deep as I would like to they run around like a chicken with its head cut off . The only problem is that they do occasionally roll over . Do other hunting baits roll or is that a bad thing . When my baits roll they stay under the water and continue a wild ride back to the dock . It feels like three different baits in one . At any one point in the cast it feels like the vibration changes but I casted into open water . I only tested them from a dock and never made bottom contact to know exactly how deep they run but I am thinking around two feet when I was expecting three to four feet . Does the hunting rob overall diving depth ? Do deeper divers hunt ? If so how deep do the deepest hunters go ?
  4. I am just finishing up a new batch of lures and plan to tune them in tomorrow. In the past I just retie to each lures split ring but doing multiple bait this wastesline and is time consuming . I want to try using a snap this time but I don't know if whis will affect how it tunes . I seldon use a snap when fishing but when I do I have noticed some lures don't track as well with them . Does any one else use snaps to tune ?
  5. has any one tried this stuff out . might have to give it a try .
  6. It seems that the extra weight of devcon makes the bait dive deeper and chances the wobble a little . This probably isn't a bad thing just not what I was trying to acomplish .I don't know if it makes a difference but I am painting with wal mart water based craft paint .
  7. When I paint new baits and topcoat with devcon the baits seems to have a different action . I would like to use some kind of spray paint but when I have tried that in the past the clear seems thin an flakes off . Is there something inbetweem devcon and clear krylon ?
  8. I have a bait that I havn't esed yet and the paint and devcon has bubbled up in aone spot . I assume that some moisture has gotten in at some point . How do I fix it without redoing the whole bait ?
  9. don't use a can opener for a lure dryer. I got my moter geared down and enough room for 10 baits .I stuck one in there to dry the weight and went to take a shower . When I checked it out after I found a stinking hot toasted moter . It turns out a can opener moter was not intended to run continuously. On to plan B whatever that is .
  10. On mt first crank that I made I used a plano devider and it worked for a little while but when it got cold out side it broke real easy . Unfortunatly I didn't know what to use instead and the bait laid on the work bench for 2 years before I found this site . I bought some lexan and won some money on it . Sad to say it is hanging in a tree in the water right now , broke my heart and my throat from screaming four letter words when it happened . I have some replacements in the works so watch out . I plan to set the water on fire this winter when they are ready .
  11. I have an old can opener that I started to fiddle with trying to make it into a drying wheel . I tried to put a dimmer switch on it but no matter how low I turned it I still got 46 rpms . I could hear a difference in the sound it made with the dimmer on low but no change in rpms. Can this be don or am I wasting time .
  12. I cought some crawdads last night and I want to match some baits to them . What do they eat ? In the same lake will a craw cought from coontail be colored differenly than one cought from rocks . I cought mine from rocks but I mainly fish coontail. If they are different how do I go about catching craws from dense weeds?
  13. I'm basically computer iliterate. Fill me in on how to post a picture . Unfortunatly it will be scanned in because I havn't gone digital yet . I used devcon 30 minute for a topcoat . The body is 2 3/8 long , 1 tall , 3/8 wide . The lip is 1 3/8 long and the same shape as a shad rap rs . For weight I had sealed the bait and all the hardware on and set it in a bucket of water and put a 1/16 oz weight on the hook. I whittled that down till it floated pretty good ,allowing for the paint and topcoat . I knew from the start that it would have to be a light bait to get the size and shape that I wanted. The air pocket wasn't intended for these baits but for future ideas . From what I have seen on this site most of the flat sided baits are still fairly wide . I was trying to make something just a bit different .
  14. I have a cheap rod drying motor that works fine for its intended purpose but now that I modified it to hold a couple lures to dry the plastic gears inside broke nearly ruining a couple baits . Where can I find a motor that will take the added weight of baits, holders , and a wheel to hold them . I still will be using it to dry rod too .
  15. I plan to rip it out of grass and a floating bait makes for a less aggrivating day . I used cedar and I was trying to match the size of a plastic bait that is good to me. The topcoat is as thin as I could get it . Infact it is too thin because after one days fishing the hook track wore through in a spot .
