  1. I've got a contract with them right now but they havnt pulled the trigger yet on full production .They were going to bring it out at ICast but who knows with all the setbacks right now.

They have the rights to the design as long as they market the bait and it goes back too me as soon as they stop marketing it.

If they don't Market it I will bring it out.

  2. The Original Manns Classic was .028 on 1/2 oz and .032 on 3/4 oz Piano wire. Now it is SS.

I designed the  bait Hank is holding in his hand in the video front to back.

This bait is .028 on 1/2 oz and .032 on 3/4 oz. blended wire very similar to piano wire but holds memory much better, vibrates typical of piano wire and is 10 times easier to re-tune

Berkely/ pure Fishing will have this bait on the market late Feb. 2020

Why does literally everyone paint crankbaits now? It seems just a few years ago it was a small group of people who actually painted but now it seems anyone and everyone does it! I’m not saying it’s a bad thing but it’s definitely flooded the custom bait market and what used to be custom is just another crankbait. It’s kind of ridiculous. I think a big part of it is the Facebook pages, they see people painting and they want to do it. They paint for a week total and are all of a sudden opening a custom crankbait business. It just makes it hard for painters who are talented to make a living as crazy as it seems, and yes there are a few that do, to be able sell there paint jobs when it just gets copied by one of the Facebook page newbies and next thing you know they are trying to sell that color. Another thing the Facebook page has ruined is the learn as you go part and the time it takes to actually develop the skill to paint well. Everyone wants the know how and the how to put right in there lap. Just ridiculous man.

My opinions on painting plastic lure blanks are well documented. I was even reprimanded by the TU management for upsetting paying advertisers. Reprimand is a bit strong, more of a 'please stop it' :)

Strangely enough, people who attempt to copy famous, successful lures do not bother me in the slightest. I know that there is a lot more to copying a lure than shape alone. Most will fail but they will learn something about lures on the journey. In fact, I would recommend trying to copy a favourite lure in the learning process as many experienced builders also suggest.

Those who can copy a commercial successfully have all the skills to produce their own masterpieces. I often wonder why they bother, but I guess it is a challenge. I was even considering writing a thread dedicated to reverse engineering a lure without destructive examination even though I have never done it before.

I never view the gallery. I am not really interested in the current trends. I do not want my design ideas to be affected by what others are doing. Basically, body shape is a covering over the internal structure although it does have some functionality.

Because I am not commercially competing I see no reason for secrets. I even received a couple of angry PMs for revealing design secrets that they had been cashing in on for years. However they need not worry, many read the articles but very few try the ideas out. The few that do are only producing lures for personal use.

I probably got a bit off subject with this post, but there you go, I am rambling :)

Destructive examination is not necessary. Just take it to my veterinarian and have it x-rayed.

  4. Marc is right. The only way to solve the problem is find a barrier coat that will work for you.

Remember regardless the barrier coat and even if it solves your KBS issue, I would recommend making sure your barrier coat bonds to whatever you apply it over.

You can have the best / toughest top coat in the world and it's worthless if you don't have a 100% good bond with whatever is under it.

  5. I use Columbia coatings chrome powder with pretty good results.

    Have never cleared with KBS.

Regarding Chrome powders like the nail stuff .................

I've found that just about any clear coat dulls it .

  6. Urethane will hold up just fine. It does kind of depend on the type urethane your using but get that debate started and you will be deployed before it's over.

Your not married to the bait. Clearcoat it and enjoy!

Safe travels and cone home safe from deployment. From one veteran to another thank you for your service!

  7. I wish Dean McClean would surface. Every crankbait I have made by Dean hunts and I've had them 10 years.

90% of the bites come on the first 2 or 3 cranks of the reel handle.

On another note. I have been fishing the original Megabass  S- crank alot.( Not the KO).It moves off center and returns nice and this is  more probounced when bounced off cover. The body style is pot bellied and the steel balls are deep in the belly behind the front hook hanger. The bill is square but wider out to the end  than most production square bills . The rear hook hanger comes out just above the tail. If you take a step back and examine the bait carefully it doesn't look traditional and is actually kind of wierd looking. Its clear that there are multiple factors in the design that contribute to the overall performance but they have clearly figured it something else out that's not visual as the knock offs I have used don't react the same.

I am having some problems with the primer not adhesion to the wood after sealing the bait, is there some other preparation after the bait is sealed before applying the primer paint ?

I usually I sand down the bait sealer than I wipe it with a damp cloth ad now I also dry the bait in a electric oven to 90  degrees

I did switch primer paint in the past i used white rust-oleum primer, now I use Zinsser prime which I really like

    Any suggestion welcome

    Thanks

    Gino

You have just about named them all. We have a blank supplier thread that is closed. I think it would be a good idea to follow suit with s couple more categories. Maybe the mod's will consider this.

On another note. Way - way- way before pre cut stencils so popular and available, I would make my own. (Dale Sellers tought me this years ago)

Take a sheet of glass like a window Paine - get a wood burner or soldering iron and sharpen the point of the iron - lay paper on the glass and burn/cut your stencil by hand. Resume paper works best as it has a fiber that burns clean. I still make my own stencils this way.

  9. I need to get on the ball and find more. Roger Gruvso (Swede) God rest his sole, sent me a great amount of it years ago.

I use it when I'm repairing and reserecting old wood lures for people. The stuff Roger sent me is really good quality I know it won't last forever .....
