on crankbaits the top choices seem to be . cedar, mahogany, basswood. personally i use cedar.

hi the lip is set too far back in the body.look at other cranks you will see what i mean dont stop keep going .

sealing is key. we use envirotex epoxy. then primer. color and envirotex. some argue weight issues. but theres no actual weight problems ever created.

depends .clear water..tannic water etc.

hi mico ballons will weaken a body, when you pour and the foam rises blok your pour whole and vent. that will make the foam to collapse the bubbles and create a very hard outer shell.as for paints that will not affect a foam body.we use a 15lb ridid and never have your issue.

Where do you get you cedar and how does it carve with details?
we are in canada. box stores sell it in many forms.it cutseasily, sands easily.it holds screws better then pine,s .yes some folks have sensivity..the best cedars we use is white cedar from the east coast.

hands down cedar. its light, buoyant but sealed works great .other then our molded urethane lures, its what we use on cranks. just seal coak first.

we used automotive clearcoats. but as said if chipped it will start the tarnish procedure.
-
we use smooth on . use a good mold release . we use manns 2831.

yes powder paint on the spinner. on many flutter spoons powder paint creates a too heavy presentation.,and its slower in production processes.

sadly thats been an issue for decades. shooting candy paints will peel. even cleari coatinf.when spoons are plated it closes off metallic pores in metals..the larger spoon companies have aleways had issues ..nk spoons etc .i used to squirt 20,00 spoons a year ..when the markets tanked we just took spinner blades in to paint.

we used automotive etch primer also. the easiest way if your doing manufacturing numbers is. have them powder coated in white when ordered .you will never have an issue then..our topcoats we found best is automotive clearcoat 4to 1 mix. you need a exhaust system.

try luremaking.com in canada. prices are in canadien funds and cheaper then u.s. pricing.

wow a lotta history. i started from watching my dad,in the 1950,s.after chasing girls and marriage i started.my passion soon became a job..from buyouts, travelling fom canada to bagley bait co. we did re-paints and building baits for the toothy critters up here on l.st clair..life now is slower near 70 still building and passing things on to my son and the younger folks.remember every failure becomes a learning curve to succsess.this site is an awesome curve for the future and present builders.

jigs are easy. buy a do-it mold . crankbaits will require a bit more things to build baits.
