  1. Wow. you're way ahead of me . All I have done so far is like I said, mess around with the hooks and shaved a few lips and popper bottem lips. That Spook sectioning thing you do sounds real interesting to me. What action does it have after the mod and what type of glue do you use to reatach the halves. Oh, and where on the lure do you remove the section from, ie... exact middle or more toward one end or the other?
  2. I have seen many repaints on factory baits which look better than the original factory paint job and that alone is a modification or change to the original bait. But how many go a step futher and actually modify the shape of the lure or shape of the lip or in other words actually change the physical aspects of the bait. And if you're willing, share the modification and how it changes the baits action and perfomance. I'm a tinkerer at heart and love to mess around with various lures. Something as simple as changing the hooks, size or even just the brand, can change the depth at which a suspending bait actually supends. You can pick up a small scale that will weigh very small weights and them you can see how different hooks change the way a bait acts.
  3. Thanks for the reply Captsully18 (David) and all the others that have responded, you and all the others have been very helpful. I will be stealing my wife's hairdryer from now on when painting lures and I'm also going to switch to Dicknite's. He has responded to my request and I will be ordering my first pint today. Well not really, my first pint I should say my frist pint of Dicknite's. Thanks again to ALL!!!!
  4. Dean; I did a search and read about the oxygen blocker, did you or anyone try it?
  5. Dean, you said, How about elaborating on that subject. I have sent the e-mail , a couple of days ago ,to Dicknite from the TU add link but haven't gotten any responce. It sounds like some really good stuff if I can get my hands on some.
  6. Hey Dean, I have a cousin up in Ohio that just got himself for his birthday a 35gal. sti.. er I mean cooker and he is looking for a good fungus remover recipe. He said he had heard that the right amount of corn could really make your feet happy.
  7. Thanks guys! you have been very helpful. I'll be ordering some Dicknite's and untill that comes in I'll switch to epoxy and a little heat on the paint first. About the heat, do you bake the lures in a small oven or just use a heat gun? Thanks again this web site is invaluable to anyone wanting to make their own lures.
  8. I painted some lures with cretex pearl paints and sealed the lures with water based polyurathane. After fishing the baits for a hour or so, in saltwater, the paint layers above the white pearl seperated and peeled off. This occured after catching a few toothy fish which scratched the surface and allowed water to access the lower layers of paint. The baits are top water walk the dog types, and are Bass Wood construction. The same water based polyurathane was used to seal the wood. My questions are why did the paint seprate between the gold pearl and white pearl layers and not the others and what should I do to stop this from happening?
  9. Thanks for the info. I kind of knew from poking around and doing some searches that there had been some sort of a crash in the past but I had no idea it was so severe. I'm sure the recovery will be a long, hard and time-comsuming road. This site has become my favorite. I check it out almost daily to see what's new and have already learned a great deal from just reading the posts. As I get farther into building baits, I'm sure I'll have a lot of questions to ask. The main thing I have already learned is that I have a lot to learn!
  10. I'm having a problem with the member submitted tutorials. Hope someone out there can tell how to fix it. When I select a tutorial, I get all of the text but no pictures. All I get are the little red x's. I've tried a couple of things but nothing has worked so far. Any help would be very much appreciated.
  11. Please, by all means keep posting. That is high quality workmanship. How long does it take from start to ready for paint? In fact if you are willing I would love to see your process broken down in a step by step how-to posting. I for one,and probably many others, could learn a great deal from such a post. Once again, Great Work!
  12. Hello Everyone, I just discovered this forum through another thread on the Florida Sportsaman Forum. I used to carve balsa lures way back in the 70's strictly for my own use and kind of got out of it, but I have recently rekindled my interest. I have only carved a few cedar plugs so far but it's kind of like riding a bycicle, you never forget. Anyway I'm looking forward to reading and learning. I've been looking at a several of the pics and it is evident that there are a lot of excellent craftsmen on here.
