  1. Better is subjective I've had no problems with Mustads and luv the VMC barbarians
  2. From iCast - DoIt's releasing a Ned Rig mold Personally, I'll stick to a bigger rig for bigger fish. Lost a few nice ones to small hooks in Canada recently
  3. Two threads going here . Got the lead check the last physical and I'm good. I'm w/ Fatman, I use to keep sinkers in my mouth when I fished. Lucky, I guess? As far as smok'n - good for you Smalljaw. I've never been a smoker, but in the right environment - a couple beers and good friends, if someone lights up, I'll bum one (unless it's a menthol - yech!) I haven't been in the environment since Oct last year, but will jump on the chance to have a smoke again. Never felt the urge to have another afterwards. I fish with a guy for up to a week and he brings a couple extra packs of smokes with him knowing I'll bum them. After that week, I can give them up no problems. Guess I'm lucky in that regards too.
  4. After years of reliable use, one day my Lee's pot finally gave me fits. I tried everything & nothing worked. Finally read to drill out the hole on a board - MISTAKE! Bought a new Lee's pouring pot for sale and then read on some board that I can buy a new insert pot for Lees pourer for $8 from Lees. Did that, now I have two workable pour-able Lee's pots and one other that I'll explain below. On the old pourer with the new pot, I had to polish the plunger to get the pot to stop dripping. Still have one mold that gives me fits with incomplete pours (Hilts SLIDER), but a ladle does the job. I use wheel weights for one reason - they were free - but a nasty dirty job melting down wheel weights. Another guy left his lee's pot outside and it rusted. He gave it to me. The heating element still worked, so I took the pouring mechanism off, and hit the inside with a brass wheel & cleaned it up. Then heated a batch of lead and the pour spout was rusted solid. I use the pot now only to 'clean' wheel weights. For safety, incase the pour spout decides to open back up, I always clean lead in an old cookie tray. Remove all the non-lead wheel weights (scratch with a nail, easy to find only the lead ones) then heat them up and pour into a muffin tin (note: very dangerous) carefully with welding gloves. I really should use a ladle, but it's easier to pour right from the pot if I take my time and go slowly. Then use the lead muffins in oneof the good lead pot, flux, clean off anything that floats to the surface & pour. If I did this as a buiz, I'd get the RCBS pot, but since this is only a hobby, Lee's works well enough for me. Also, probably would buy clean lead if I poured allot.

    When To Post

First, I let the fish tell me if I have a bad idea, not the internet. Next, and I apologize in advance if anyone takes offence, but I believe that forums such as this are places where people with like interests come together & share. I've learned allot from forums, and continue to search for pearls that would help me in catching fish. All to often, I see posters who post something, then either a lurker or another poster "steals" the idea then runs to the marketplace with it, and the original poster gets upset. I started building tackle way before the internet got famous and if I wanted to copy a design, I'd buy it, then if it worked, reproduce it. I believe that plagiarism is the most sincere means of flattery. If someone has a design they do not want to see copy it, why post it? But then, why sell it? I build tackle as a hobby and am not in the business. I'll share just anything I learn, but do tend to keep my honey holes on the water close to my vest.
  7. That's so sad. I have a bunch of his crank baits. He was a true artist.
  8. Listen to smalljaw ... I've used my home made SWM bait jigs for just about every soft plastic in my arsenol

    Clip-On Coils

I've never had a hitch hiker style coil fail unless it was on a tube. Fixed that problem shoving a piece of senko up the butt of the tube.
  10. Go for it. If you cut to much, JB Weld. I've modified most of my molds. Make small cuts w/ a dremel, pour, see what you need to do. JB Weld fixes to big of cuts. Get a carbite bit in various sizes. I only use the smalles size I can find.
  11. I made from from a Do It SWM mold, a dremel, and multiple pours until I got it right. Since 3/8oz is to big for my fishing, filled the mold 1/2 w/ JB Weld and have a 3/16oz. Google around and you'll find the article I wrote with details on a couple boards. If you cant find it, I'll find it & post a link.
  12. I used a dremel and the smallest carbon bit I could find and a steel straigh edge
  13. First, start with clean lead. If not, heat, cool, heat, scrap off top level of scum, cool, heat, scrap until gone. Then use the screwdriver trick AND I've crafted a tool with .018 diamter leader wire - run that up the hole before you do the screwdriver trick. Something's stuck on the plunger part of the lee pot.
  14. Charlie Case from Case Bucktail has one that he crafted from an old spinning rod and reel. Ties one up in under a minute. Might want to give him a call and pick his brain.
