  1. So this would be the big reason that a wake bait has a near vertical lip.  One experiment I did a few years ago was to take a standard square bill lure and heat the lip.  Once heated I would bend it to a vertical and it would gain tremendous tail action.  When I did that I never understood why but now I do.  Boy this has me thinking

  2. Here is a picture of one bait.  Its not terrible doing it with two halves of wood But you have to put is all together in one step.  I was just thinking that if I could get away from the harness it would be much faster.  I glue the two halves together with epoxy and clamp.  After it cures I sand again and coat with epoxy.  Am I on the right track or is there more I need to do?

  3. Looking back today it has been almost 5 years since I was last on here.  Man I have missed it bad!!  But recently I have been able to get back in the shop and doing some work.  So today I come with a question about balsa cranks.  I have built plenty of shallow divers with a through bait harness and they work great.  In the last month I have been working on a medium diver with the line tie in the lip.  I have learned that it is very difficult to do this as a complete through bait harness.  Maybe I am making this to hard and maybe it is not a must.  What are you guys thought on this?  Is the through wire really required with balsa?

  4. Ok so my new water base paint came yeasterday.  I ordered Auto Air colors and reducer.  So I started reading thru the material that came with the paint.  I have also read on the internet about painting with water colors.  So I tried a test bait last night and it was horrible.  The paint would puddle and run.  The information that came with the paint said the mix it with reducer 3:1.  I did but could not spray it because of the thinkness of the paint or my nozzle is to small.

Here are my questions on this:

    1) what is a "normal" mix ratio

    2) What is the normal dry time?  (I read to let the bait air dry before you heat it)  True???

I feel like I am starting from square one again.  LOL

    Thanks

  5. I have been trying to vaccum seal some stencils so they fit like a mold.  I heat the stencil material with a heat gun until it starts to melt and turn the vaccum on.  It pulls about 75% of the stencil down but it wrinkles and just never get the profile of the bait.  The stencil material I us is a frosted mylar that I got at hobby lobby.  Have you guys done this and what is the best material to use for this?

  6. I have been useing Omni for about 6 years. It is a low end from PPG. It works very well at 2:1. Recently I have been doing a little testing with D2T and than appling one coat of Omni. I like the depth of the D2T but some times it will yellow. So this lead me to try a single coat Omni over the D2T to cure the yellowing. So far it has worked but I am not sold 100% yet. Anyone else tried this???

  7. My Brite Back came in the mail yesterday. I tried it last night on a bait. It is very stiff but I think it will work well. I am concerned about the weight of it. Have you noticed a difference with the action of a lure with this applied?

  8. I recently bought a twin tank IR at Tractor Supply. I run 4 guns off of it and it works great. It has a regulator on it and it is good. I have the compressor in one room and hard piped into my paint room. I have a second regulator and moisture trap right beside my spray booth so I can adjust on the fly. Pretty cool set up for an ole country boy like me.
