  1. Mark, if you are still looking for a way to pour a trebble in the middle of a big grub I can help. I make very large tails for Musky lures that have a 7/0 treble molded dead center. The first thing I do is make my form out of wood. When I have it finished I cut the form at the place where I want the bend of the hook to be. Then I drill a hole big enough for the eye end of the hook to pass thru. Carefully mark where the the round bend of the hook will ride and using a round file make slots in the wood. When the slots are deep enough the cut off piece of the mold should fit back on the other half of the mold flush. Fill the area around the hook shaft with plastic wood. Glue the two halves back together. I dip the whole thing in a wood sealer until the surface is smooth. Now you need to make a shallow box to be the pan for pouring the rtv (blue works good). Place one of the trebble points straight down and mark the box where it rides. Cut a tight slot for the hook point to slip into. You now have to also have to cut a small slot for the hook eye to enter. When you are done the mold should be laying flat on the bottom of the box. Depending on how much rtv you pour will determine how much of the other two points of the hook are covered. If there is rtv covering some of the hook on top, just carefully use a razor blade and slit it so the mold comes out without tearing. I have molds I have been using many times and they still are in good shape. Be sure to tape the slots in the wood box before pouring plastic. Hope that gives you some ideas. Ed

    Wood Sealer

I want to seal basswood lures I have turned on the lathe. I will be drilling holes in these bodies from front to back so I'm thinking some type of sealant that is very thin and could be used in a dipping method. Most outdoor wood sealers have a oil in them that prevents paint sticking. Anybody have any ideas?
  3. It has took me a long time and several molds before I finally came up with a way to mold a large trebble in a 12" lure. I first carved my lure shape out of a wood dowel. I then cut the dowel the length of the trebble I wanted to use. Then I drilled a hole down the center of the short cut off piece big enough to push the eye of the trebble in. On the other end of this short piece of dowel I marked the three places where the hook rides. Then I removed the hook and cut slots in the dowel so the hook would be flush. After installing the hook I filled the hole in the dowel with wood putty and sanded flat. Then I glued the dowel back together. To make the mold I Made a box out of wood [ 1/4" hard wood]. Then I cut a slot in the bottom of the box for one point of the hook. I also made a slot in the front of the box for the hook eye. I pushed the form in the box so the front of the lure was flush to the front of the box with the hook eye in the front slot and the hook point sticking out the bottom and the dowel resting on the box. Before I pored rtv I covered the two slots with silver tape. Making the actual lure is as easy as installing the trebble and closing the slots with silver tape each pour. The lure comes out of the mold easy with a trebble dead center in the center of the lure.
  4. I would like to make large tubes like the tiger tube that are probably 8" long. i can't think of a pot or heating system that would work. I would think something in the order of 12" deep and 6" inches in diameter would be great.. Any ideas?
  5. What I want to do is simple ----I want one big 7/0 trebble in the middle [speaking diameter now] in a 12 inch worm profile bait to be used as a component in a bigger lure. The hook eye will protrude barely from the front of the worm. Nothing fancy and no wires....just a hook.
  6. I have been giving this a lot of thought lately. I think I will use a dowel to carve my mold shape out of. then cut the dowel for the hook end, drill a hole in that piece and then hand carve slots for the hook. Then I will glue the two pieces back together. When I put all of that in the mold box I will position two points of the hook down and add the mold material. The hook points will get stuck in the mold material and I will have to burr them out but really all I need is the slots near the mold cavity to hold the hook in place. Sound like it might work? Ed
  7. that's it.....only one idea on how to mold in a large trebble? Vodkaman, any good ideas come up since yesterday?
  8. I am new to this site so if my question has been covered before, I'm sorry. I want to make a mold to make 12 inch slugo type plastic lures. I have the mold making method down pat but I can't come up with a good way to make a mold that would include a 7/0 treble. If anyone has any ideas I would be gratefull.
