Sorry, a forward facing C joint. I say C because it's not really a V

Hey Vodkaman,
Recently i made a reverse jointed swimbait and it turned out sick..... Just thought i would let you know
-
I tried taking a wood carving chisel with a similar shape to my bait before i had read your response. i think it will work with practice.
Brilliant invention though
-
Thanks 152
I did a little research to see who has made baits with scales on them and i found Jeep's Esox pike to have scales... i would like to know how he did those.
-
They have fish scale leather stamps??? do you have a link or a picture?
btw i am not limiting my search to exclusively fish scales i would also like a rhombus like pattern
-
I've looked at the wood burning stuff... It looks tedious. I do wonder whether or not there is a material that could be used to just hammer in the bait to give it texture and go from their... Trying to think outside of the box here. I believe a new method of making scales is soon needed.
-
I am more looking for a way to put the scales on a bait so that i could use the bait to make a mold and have several reproductions of the same bait with scales not on the outside of the bait but part of the bait itself. You know what i mean? if not i could clarify.
-
I am extremely curious to know if any of you have ever tried putting scales on a wooden bait and if it worked. I'd like to know some manner of creating texture on my baits but i don't know where to start.
-
Thank you all so much for your response i will attempt to implicate all of these nuances into my current bait.
OH one more question... how many sections do you find necessary?
-
@dave- if you could get the action along with the added realism what would be so bad about that? I also wonder if you have ever seen the 316 Lure company lures... it seems to me like you'd like em
@ Tater- HAHAHAHA nice
-
@ mainbutter- You feel that the more unrealistic/ something the fish are more curious about reason for them striking the lure sort of thing? And my next question would be if you noticed a difference between the number of fish you caught on a realistic lure as compared to an unrealistic one?
to all reading -In your own opinion do you feel that scales are necessary?
-
I am very thankful that you all replied to my inquiring mind. Action seems very important to all of you. I do agree about the inconviences of a bill on the head, I don't like them either. Action and aesthetics. These are things that i will focus on with my upcoming baits. You have all confirmed my suspicions and i am very greatful that i am not the only one who feels this way.

Maybe i should clarify... Do you look for ingenuity? as in how the hooks are hidden or does it matter to you if the hooks are hanging? Does action play the biggest factor for you? or does paint job seal the deal? Does fin detail matter? does an open mouth make a difference? what combination of these different factors would you like to see?
-
Whether it looks realistic or outrageous, swimbaits catch fish often. When making and designing your own baits what would be a dream bait for you personally?
-
Lol mike that would be one big tooth brush
Hey nitro,
would posting the link to your eye supplier be a possibility
-
I have heard of using a hot glue gun to keep the clear coat out of the joints but i don't know that that solves your dilema.
-
Well, some people have made them out of wood, but if your looking for the hair type stuff, it is called friskets. I believe you can get it from fly fishing suppliers.
i thought they were called fibbets?
-
i think that's a great idea! i know that taxidermists also "tip" each scale with a createx silver or gold, i don't know if you would want to do that too but it's just a suggestion
-
Mmmk with a baby bass paint job there are several ways to do it and many different paints that you can use but by far the best paint job is done by mattlures
here is his paint job
with a paint job this complex the final colors are transparent so that you do get those silver and gold scales to pop out at you when painting, also the best place to get specific transperent bass colors is wasco.com. they have med bass and dark bass good luck man
-
i don't know if any of you have seen these close up but there is absolutely no, and mean no seam line what so ever.
-
I wanted to take a stab at a 2 piece swimbait. i have made 3 piece ones before, but is there anything different about them functionally? i have seen some with lips but was not sure if they were necessary. i am not sure if any of you have seen that huge Mother swimbait, but i just was thinking about a scaled down version of that maybe.
it may work you will probably get a lot more top to bottom wobble unless you shape it perfectly!!!... give it a shot and tell us how it turned out
-
i guess i should add "if you were purchasing", not making.
piano hinge... why? well because the lure has a no see through hinge or joint... its just cosmetics though
-
One trick to make sure you get a good part two is to pull your original out of part one. Coat your RTV with Vaseline. insert your original back into part one of your mold. that way you do not get any Vaseline on you original and only on part one RTV.. make sure you seal your original first if it is sculpted out of wood I use clear poly to seal my original before i make my molds it will fill in the pours of your wood. and give you a good release from the rtv. Disregard this step if you make your original out of plastic or clay
Hope this helps
K.C.
hey thanks guys that was a big help and probably saved me like twenty bucks
-
All you need is good old Vaseline if it is your rtv to rtv part line. just wash it good with dish soap afterword ...
does it need to be thick or just an extremely thin layer?
