  1. I use the q tip method, they also have "Dot" painters at some hobby stores. Sometimes after I use the qtip I actually use a tiny paint brush to detail my eyes. And, sometimes I just paint them on like the attached pic. I'll post another pic of my detailed eyes.

  2. Oh gosh who knows, I'm on the fence. I think natural baits should be good because lets face it, fish live for years eating natural prey, there are no firetiger or pink shad swimming around. But on the other hand I think you might get a reaction strike outa some bright ungly color. So I think it's both, one fish might like a natural bait right now, but when he's inactive, might cream a chartreuse bait. Bottem line it depends on the fishes mood...

    Just my opinion..

  3. To your list of supplies add a hairdryer or heat gun. When you get the bubbles, give them just a minute or two to rise to the top and use the heat gun. The heat will pop them most of the time. I keep a safety pin handy for the tough ones, there are bubbles that I've had to pop with the pin. I also actually use the heat on a the cup of epoxy before applying it, it actually gets rid of the bubbles that develop from stirring.

  4. I use the throw aways, have metal handle's with black bristles. Very hardy, clean between each batch and they last forever. I still get bubbles though....don't know if its the brushes fault??

  5. Thanks guys

First I'd like to apologize to you guys. Last week I started this post but just as I started typing I had to quit, little did I know I accidently sent it. So what you got was the first four words that made absolutely no sense and actually like I'd been drinking a bit. So anyways, my question. I think I saw once that you can sand a bait thats been epoxied with the Devcon Two type epoxy and re epoxy it and it will end up clear. My issue is I have some baits that have some tiny raised bubbles that I'd like to sand out and re-epoxy. Anyone know anything about this? I appreciate your help.

  6. Yeah Dave it looked like I was drunk but I wasn't lol. Thanks for your response.

I remember seeing that post and the thought that alcohol was involved never crossed my mind, LOL.

Yes, you can sand the imperfections and re-epoxy coat and it will come out clear.

It is better to re-epoxy the entire body, rather than just patches, or the patches will be slightly visible, at least to you. The fish will not be bothered though, for some reason they tend not to pick up on such minor imperfections. This will mean sanding the whole body. The sanding is required to give the new coat something to grip onto.

  8. fishnart ... I thought about that method too. I also was thinking about maybe leaving the plug in while I clear coat and while the clear coat is fresh (soon I as get through brushing it on) remove the plug and set it aside to dry.

The only think I would worry about doing it like this Kris is if one tiny little drop dripped or rolled in the hole then it might mess the whole thing up. I think if we get epoxy on the threads the bait will be ruined. That could happen with my idea too, so not sure???
  9. I tried one. Chose the ballast I wanted, screwed in the plug and finished the bait as usual, so the plug became permanent. They are fairly large, heavy baits. I suggest you take it to the lake and try it before you decide which ballast to use. I gave mine away so can't help on running depths or action.

I just got some but haven't painted them yet. I couldn't get mine unscrewed lol. I think what I'm gonna try is to paint it like you want. Take the screwed in piece out and epoxy the bait being very careful not to get any epoxy into the hole. Then take a little dab (just enough) and epoxy the screw in part not letting epoxy get onto the threads. If it does maybe use a qtip with laquer thinner and rub it out of the hole?????

  10. You aren't running a factory that can zip unpainted baits through an automated painting line staffed by 3rd world labor at the rate of 5,000 per day. So the original cost of the bait has nothing to do with custom bait painting. If the customer wants a $6 paint job, let him go buy some $6 factory baits. It's likely that the customer has beat up baits whose color patterns have been great producers for him but which he can't get any longer from the factory because they changed the pattern or the lure. Or they're "special baits" which are priceless to him because they're the ones that catch fish when other stuff won't. Balance that against what you want to get out of custom bait painting and pick a price.

All VERY VERY good points....and thats exactly how I feel. I just wanted to make sure I was on the same page as you guys. Thanks for taking the time to reply with such insightful replies...

  11. For those of you who paint baits and sell them I need your opinion on pricing. How much do you, or would you, charge someone who gives you a bait to paint a custom paint job. I have no problem pricing baits that I do with elaborate paint jobs, but I do for baits that have basic paint jobs, such as two colors. I'm pretty sure that this specific color combination, or something very close could be found in a tackle store or cataloge somewhere. It's nothing crazy. I know I should charge for my time etc, and materials are very little. Right now I would charge $6 for this job, which I feel is fair. But you can probably buy this bait brand new for the same price. I also understand that he's coming to me with a specific bait and color combination so he should expect to pay some. I'd like to know your feelings....

    Thanks

oops sorry, pressed the wrong button...twice. I appreciate your input for sure Rookie. Yeah I probably should be charging a little more, and I do for baits that have more of a detailed finish. I do spend a lot of time on those. But in this case, theres no way I can justify charging that much for what I did on these baits, but I could maybe charge a little more???? Thanks for taking the time to respond. Anyone esle wanna have a go?

  12. 6 bucks.. wow.. do you sand them before you paint them... Do you tape off the lips so you dont get paint it.. Do you wash the dust off after you sand the bait. Do you take a tack rag to the bait before you clear coat it.. how long does it take you to clean out your airbrushes after you paint the bait.. how many paper towels do you use to clean up the mess. etc.. and so on....

See you time is worth more than you THINK!!! 20 to 25 bucks if you want to actually make money for your labor and supplies you will need to do the job the right way. Just my opinion.. but what do I know everyone always tells me I charge too much... My feeling is if they aint willing to pay me for my time than Im not willing to do that great of job..... If anyone ever asked me to paint a bait for 6 bucks and I agreed..WHICH WOULD NEVER HAPPEN.....EVER....CAUSE TATER is the World's Most Famous REDNECK LURE ARTIST OF ALL TIME AND HAS set standards.. You should be paying me 10 BUCKS JUST for my opinion.. ( FOR YOU SERIOUS TU PEOPLE.. YOU KON WHO YOU ARE... BEFORE YOU SAY IM COCKY AND FULL OF MYSELF..Which actually is true..but I try to do it in a fun loving way so XOXOX HUGS AND KISSES TOO ALL OF YOU!!!. THIS IS ME HAVING FUN AND IS NOT MENT TO BE TAKEN THE WRONG WAY LIKE I KNOW SOME OF YOU WILL TAKE IT CAUSE YOU HAVE NO SENSE OF HUMOR AND ARE TOO DARN SERIOUS ALL THE DAM TIME).. where was I... oh yeah... But if It did or just to prove the point Im trying to make... I'm willing to bet I WILL GIVE them 6 BUCKS WORTH OF WORK! DINO WHERE DID I PUT MY CREATEX CLEAR COAT!!!! 15. lol my name isn't fisheye, fisheye is what its called when a clearcoat is repelled by a spot of grease or oil on a surface, leaving a little bare spot, or "fisheye".

hahahaha, I knew that...I was just testing you to see if you knew what your name was ;-)

  16. epoxy won't stick to oil. thats why epoxy topcoats fisheye so much, because oils from fingerprints repel the epoxy and leave a bare spot, aka fisheye.

Thanks fisheye, that makes sense too. gonna just try chalk and seal it first. See what happens.

  17. Well I tried to upload a pic but says it's too big and I'm not technical enough to resize it. I just started a Facebook page under "Fishnart". Feel free to check it out and tell me what you think. Eventually I'll get more photos on it and learn how to put them on here.

  18. If I had to choose go with the oils. You can work them around with turpentine so they smear or blead.

The chalk is just that chalk. It is going to need a good tooth and will flake easily.

    Good Luck!

    G

Yeah good thought. I might be able to seal the chalk though?? We'll try it and see, thats one way to find out huh?

  19. Hey guys i've been in a mania since ive started makeing my own baits. I would like as many replies to this as i can get its just an idea i have and i think it may be good so i wanted to run it by you guys and see what you thin or have to say.

My dream is to own my own tackle shop with some of my custom stuff in it. But i took a closer look to the compitition out there and was blown away by how many companies are actually out there but none the less i want to do it. I did however find a lack in the system that no one had. Well there are tons of your normal bait shops with you stirkekings, bandits, lucky crafts and such. Sometimes they also have a few of there own creations in it also.

But anyway ill get to the point i think i want to open up a shop with everyones custom baits in it. I've looked on here and have been blown away with the baits and maybe if there was one place you could go to get them all it would be a hit.

Just an idea but if anyone wants to suggest anything or offer help truthfully i see so many great lure builders on here that this would be the main place to get all the custom baits. Sorry if this sounds all jumbled up because im kinda excited about the idea!h

I think it sounds pretty interesting. I think about me and I think I'd visit a shop like that.

  20. That sounds like a great material!

I checked with Michael's, and all they have is plaster gauze.

What store did you find it at, or can you dig up the name of the material?

Hey Mark, I got it at AC Moore, I'm shocked that Michael's doesn't have it. If you don't have a AC Moore's just check some art supply websiites. I think this stuff is pretty popular. If for some reason you still can't find it email me and I'll try to get the name of it so you can search for it that way. My email is fishnart24@yahoo.com. Let me know if I can help you in any other way, its a great tool
