  3. Hello folks, been a while since i last posted however i have what i THINK is an interesting question.... Before injecting my stick baits, can i place a weight (splitshot, nail weight, bb's, rubber internal tube weights-not sure what there called, etc. etc.) in to the center of each cavity of my mold??? I am trying to add weight to my stick baits (i understand the normal way-salt,sand...fine, course, etc.) Will the plastic inject properly? will the weight end up being exposed(because it sinks in the hot plastic)? will the weight be pushed to the end of the cavity? OR, will it work perfectly as i am imagining(the weight staying in the center of the cavity, and in the center of the bait)??? And, if you agree, what types of different materials do you think I could use aside from lead (tiny shards of glass, rubber, wood, wire) any ideas???? What are your opinions?????? thank you!
  4. Quick question here folks: My idea is this, I want to drill a few small holes in my aluminum stick bait mold. It is a 5 cavity injection mold from bears. The point is that the plastic will fill the small holes creating a dimple effect at both ends of the bait, creating a little different look and possibly slightly different action. Is it possible to drill a small hole in an aluminum mold with a regular drill and a regular small bit? OR is the aluminum to hard and strong to drill through? What do you guys think??
  5. Hey all, what are some of the better names/products out there in relation to injectors, injection molds, etc.? In light of my last post, I am going to start injecting baits instead of pouring. For now, I will be making baits for personal use only but I would still like a decent amount of production. So, long story short, what do I need and what are some of the better products? (quality, speed of production, ease of use) Thank you in advance! nick
  6. Hi everyone, Been awhile since I posted, just got married and got back from my two week honeymoon( 1 week maui, 1 week kauai) AWESOME! Anyway, made a deal with the wifey that I wouldnt start buying materials and what not until after the wedding(had to save!!!) My questions are: who sells top poor molds? Are top poor molds consistent? do you guys recommend top poor molds vs open molds? can you top poor injection molds? p.s. the reason I ask is because I am kind of stuck between whether I want to inject or hand pour my baits, plus and minus to both.... Thanks for your help!! Wedding and honeymoon are over and im looking to buy, buy, buy$$$$
  7. Does anyone know where I can find the berkley powerbait 5" saltwater swim shad mold??? Thank you folks! here is the link for a picture of the bait: http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_-1_10001_97166_151004005_151000000_151004000_151-4-5
  8. Hello folks, Still a rook on this site but have been reading and posting questions for a few months now...very addictive. This site is like my email, I have to check everyday. Thank you to everybody who takes the time to post helpful information. To the guys who have been doing this for years, thanks for sharing your knowledge and SOME of your secrets which have taken hours/days/weeks to figure out. It sure helps new people like me and truly speeds the learning curve. Without this site/forum I would have been overwhelmed and would have procrastinated to the point of no beginning. So ultimately, thank you all very much. All the new guys and im sure the veterans appreciate it very much! ON TO MY POINT.... In order to HELP create your future baits, do you guys do a lot of cutting and pasting with current designs? I feel I have a knack for this and have a good imagination. What I have been doing ALOT lately is cutting and pasting. By this I mean, for example, cutting some small appendages on one bait, taking a body from another, adding some claws or a new paddletail, etc etc. Does anyone else do this? Is this cheating? What do you guys do to HELP create a new bait? Is there a good clay or putty I can use to make my very own creation? One in which I dont need to add water to the clay so it doesnt dry out or crack or any of that nonsense? Thank you for any help> You guys are great and are a real inspiration!
  9. Hello all, for you guys who make baits for a living, or a side job, what mold material do you prefer to use? (1 part molds) aluminum, fiberglass resin, rtv silicone, or pop. I know most of these have their place but what do you prefer??? My point is, I have been making fiberglass resin molds and I have come to realize that there will almost always be suttle imperfections. Does this happen with other mold materials?
  10. For now I am making mostly craws/creature baits...yes, I have been glueing the baits to the bottom. Am I supposed to be DRENCHING the master with pam? I have been applying pam liberally but not drenching it and making a mess of it. Any thoughts???
  11. Hello all, Fiberglass resin or just me being dumb??? I have been making a few molds now and I have been coming across the same problem every time the mold is complete. When I take my master out, little pieces are getting stuck here and there and I cant seem to really get them out, not even with all of the little sculpting tools I have. There not like big chunks rather small pieces stuck in crevices and around the edges. I use pam on the master so I am not sure why this is such a problem however it is because it seems no matter how hard or long I try, I can not get these little terds out. Is there anything I can put on it? Can I soak it in something? PLEASE HELP ME!!!!! Again, I am making the molds out of fiberglass resin.
  12. What is the best STORE bought material for making molds? (ease of use, good detail, etc.) What is better, silicone/rubber mold or fiberglass resin mold? (detail, ease of use, price)...why?? I have been searching ALL over the place for mold making materials (paint stores, hardware stores, home depot, lowes, walmart) and the only thing I have found so far is fiberglass resin and water putty. I am getting extremely frustrated because I would like to begin making molds however I am stuck in the sense of lack of material options. I am not sure I want to order mold making materials online yet... can you give me any advice....Thanks so much guys!!
  13. I have been doing a lot of tinkering with plastics that have already been manufactured by big companies. I have been taking pieces off here and there and glueing pieces back together, essentially creating my own bait with pre existing pieces. My question is, if I were to continue to do this, cutting/glueing and then make my own mold of my new creation, does this infringe on the companies patent (if they have one) if I decided to sell my baits? How do I figure out if a company has a patent on a bait? Thanks for the input
  14. Is there a place where I can see what the final colors will look like (on a final product) before choosing/ordering colors from say, fishing world?? (there is a lot of colors on the color chart, but what do they look like??) For example, What is the difference between pearlescent + irodescent pearl? What does non-bleed mean?? Thanks for the help!!!!
  15. Has anyone ever used urethane rubber for making molds instead of say, plaster of paris? If so, do you like or dislike? where can you buy this stuff? If you have never seen or heard of this rubber, here is a video link:
  16. WOW! I am glad I decided to post the question. I have received a lot of input from you guys and it is much appreciated. What a great place to quicken the learning curve. It is great to hear from people with similar interests who have been doing this for some time and are willing to share valuable information. You guys are truly wetting my whistle and adding fuel to my fire in my dream to one day own a small tackle company!!!! One thing that I think your all over looking however....I do not own any molds, plastisol, glitter, dye, or equipment. I HAVEN'T EVEN MADE MY FIRST BAIT YET!!!!! That said, I hope I did not mislead you into thinking that I was at that stage already. Additionally, I hope you dont feel you have wasted your time in responding to my question because that was some great advice. I have already added your responses to my "favorites" page for future reference. That said, now that you truly understand my goal, do you feel it would be better for me to begin this process using hand pours or injection?? Again, thank you so much for your time and advice. I will always appreciate it. Thanks!
  17. This may be a loaded question, but here goes.... Is it conceivable to start a small business selling hand pours/injection baits via the internet a few months after you have made your first bait? >take everything out of the equation except for making baits- ie. forget the website, forget money, etc. my point is this....Before I came a career firefighter (10 months ago) I always wanted a job in the fishing industry. I worked for a tackle company where my job was to make assorted spinnerbaits, jigs, chatterbaits, etc. As a firefighter my schedule allows me to continue to pursue that dream as I work 24 hr shifts, with 72 hrs off. To make a long story short, I am looking to begin pouring my first baits in the next few months. In a perfect world, I would like to have enough knowledge and practice to get my small business up and running by December/January of this coming year. Is that a practical goal or am I being unrealistic. Please feel free to be brutally honest with any comments...I am looking for valuable input from those with experience in the field. Thank you very much!!!
  18. When heating, say laminate plastic/colors, can you put two pyrex cups in a microwave? Do you need two microwaves? OR.... do you heat one, take it out, then put the other one in? (in the last example, wouldn't that cause one to cool and solidify too quickly?)
  19. Thanks for your responses. For now it would be personal use (not too mention i have not even started yet/have never done this before). My ultimate goal however is to get going making my own baits, gain some knowledge and experience, then turn it into a side job. I am a firefighter and I work 24 hr shifts, with 72 hrs off in between. I am young (24), and would absolutely be the luckiest person in the world if I could do 2 things that I love for a living, Fishing and Firefighting. I worked for a fishing company making spinnerbaits/chatterbaits, jigs, etc and I've always wanted to get into soft plastics. Anyway, I ask about injection/hand pours because my ultimate goal is to start my own little business. next questions: *without going overboard (knowing my position now and my ultimate goal), what injection equipment would be a good place to start? *all things considered, what do you believe my initial expenses would be? I am going to be looking for some serious help in the near future so I appreciate your time and input! Thanks guys
  20. this discussion is for making laminate baits.... *does anybody have any experience with the twinjector from basstackle? *do the laminates come out as well with this piece of equipment compared to hand pouring laminates? last question....without thinking about, you can only choose one: hand pour or injection?????
  21. Hello folks, I am brand new to this website and to pouring baits. I am 100% interested in getting into this line of work and have been for years. My only problem?? I have no idea where to begin and what equipment I need. I have been searching this websites forums and links, and while I have seen a lot of the equipment/products that are out there, I can not decipher what is right for me. Long story short, what do I need in order to make my own soft plastics from molds to plastisol and everything in between? Should I hand pour or use injection molds? What are the benefits? Additionally, are there any instructional books/dvds out there that take you through the process step-by-step? Thank you guys for any information you could give me as I feel I have finally found a place that may be able to get me started in the right direction.
