Wow these are amazing! Do you airbrush the paint on after the bait is moulded? And is it a silicone based paint too, to make it stick?

some is painted inside the mold, some airbrushed after the bait is cured. and yes, is silicone based paint

  2. Great, but perhaps I do not understand: did you pour it in a silicone mold, or did you pour it with silicone raw material?

    Bye

The body material is silicone. As a matter of fact the molds are also made of silicone :)

  3. Thank you Ben. You are 100% correct, I've coated a few with auto clear and they look really nice. On one I used epoxy and I must confess it looks better than those coated with auto clear. Epoxy gives the bait a beautiful depth and makes it kinda "complete" so to say.

  4. @ifish thank you. No 3d printer. I wish I could, I suppose it would cut my production time big time.

I just take a different approach from the mainstream. Most guys are just carving the body. I do carving also but I model with clay/putty mostly. is more like building a puzzle if you see what I mean: carve the body in wood, carve the main details also in wood, then start adding stuff (putty and modelling clay). then cover the body in a scale mesh - btw creating that scale mesh is a pain in the a**. this and getting a perfect symmetry I consider to be the greatest challenges.

I work through addition instead of substraction. What I can say is that it takes actually more than straight carving but I guess the results are better and you get that unique look.

  5. thnaks guys. Eric, yes, I designed it from scratch using pictures of the real thing as reference. Still considering making it a 4 part bait instead of just 3 parts. It is still a work in progress with lots to do

  6. consider investing in a wood burning "pencil" with different tips. it helps with the 3D details big time. my 0.02$: just take your time and do your best. I'm sure you'll be fine. my first lures looked like a bad joke so I can tell you it is just a matter of practice

  7. I use airbrush colors, mainly transparent, from a german company called Schminke. I think they are available in the States, too. Pretty old and big company.

I found their colors to be more intense and bright so to say. Besides they are ready to use and if a color is not ready made I can always use the RAL table they provide, so that I can create my own.

Some details I add using a very fine paintbrush (using the same airbrush colors)
