  1. Ben i am there with you on the patties. It is one of the dishes i learned to make from my father. I am passing the torche to my sons. They love'em. My wife adds chopped halipino to the mix. There great!
  2. Jonister i love carving. Favorite part of the process. I also like the idea of storing my lure parts in cans that once stored fish. I feel closer to my prey. Lol Scrubs it's easier than it looks.
  3. Hmmm I reached my limit after one but this hobby is addictive. As long as there is wood in that blue box, I plan to keep going. Did I mention I like sardines, hormel chili with no beans and an occasion salmon patty isn't a bad thing either.
  4. Dave Thank you for sharing your hard work! Very much appreciated. Vic
  5. Bill By far the best fish catcher I have built to date is a flat sided bait. I love hand carving round baits, so I make very few flat sided baits. We are all different. I think the flat sided bait is more fish like.
  6. JRammit Honestly , shooting and posting the video required a great deal of effort even with all this modern equipment but your right; seeing really shortens the learning curve. To that end, I really appreciate feedback . Sharing experience and knowledge is what TU and life is all about. A couple things I learned my from making myself shoot this video. One , how to download pictures and video directly to my computer from phone. I have always sent picture to my mail and video directly to you tube in the past . This time i downloaded the video from my phone to my computer . I had to visit samsung website to dowload a program that allowed me to do it but it was free. I was going to edit this footage but really no time for that at the moment. Another reason is it is much quicker to upload video from computer to youtube than it is to upload it directly from phone. So going forward i will be doing all my vids in this new to me way. Second , I learned I need to hold my cell phone sideways for a wider shot . I did not like this narrow format . Finally, I learned i need to mount the phone in some way . Not sure how yet but it needs to be done. It will make a better experience for myself and the viewer. Your in the right place to shorten your build time. The only reason I am able to make and test a lure in such a short time is because all the knowledge I gained from the great people here at TU. I have learned almost everything i know about lure building here. Everything from carving from Lincoya and super glue sealing from Vodkaman to hand painting and basic lure design from diemai. I am more than happy to give back. Look forward to seeing your baits sometime soon. Best of luck! Vic
  7. Dave Can't wait to see it . Your tanks and under water footage is legendary. In the mean time, I'll put your advice to use and capture what I can. Thanks again and good luck with the completion of the project.
  8. Hi John It is nice to be back making a few baits after such a long absence. Really missed process and people. Good to see you too! I like action too. Do a bit more testing of the proto before I finish and put in the field. Thanks for watching and sharing!
  9. Hi JRammit Your right! It never fails. Someone always seems to be around when testing lures. This is a public park so privacy is not to be expected. I like your idea of giving the bait a jerk but it will have to wait till i get some glue on the toe eye. lures do ok for moderate casting and reeling unglued but jerking is out of the question. There are some limits with type of testing. I 'll for sure give it a go though when it is glued. Thank you for taking time to watch and share your thoughts!
  10. Thank you Dave for taking the time to watch and share insights. I'll definetly be using your suggestion of adding spacers to lengthen bib. Brilliant!!! I will make several varing widths to use for all my future prototypes. That just saved me a ton of work going forward. Sharp eye on the action too. The lure is wobbling and bucking. I wasnt sure that was visable in video but definatly visable in person. I'll explore bib lenghth a bit more. The action on that wide bib looks attractive to me as well. But curious what others here thought. Thanks again! Vic
  11. Made this lure after seeing TU member jonister's baits and the challenges they presented with the design. Here is some footage of my bait as i tested it in a small creek near my home today. I want to know what you think of the lures action? Any good for fishing? Any ideas for improvement? Any questions or suggestions. Really Any and all input welcome. Thanks

    Purple mack

Looking Good! Purple is not a color I'm used to seeing in a bait but bad side or not, that looks great!
  13. This is why I like to swim test everything before i glue anything.
  14. Here is Dieter's latest batch of lures. lots of baits with straight bib. These might give you some ideas on how to fix yours, He bathtub test these same lures a few videos back, After watching , i thought you may want to add a new line tie to the nose of the bait near where the bib meets the body.
  15. @ Nova Really nice baits! Is this the kind of stamping foil your talking about? http://www.ebay.com/itm/Hot-Stamping-Foil-Rolls-400-Ft-2x200ft-3-W-Chrome-Brilliant-Silver-BW88-100E-/261903115691?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3cfaa465ab
  16. Glad to here you got one working. I suggest you make just one change at a time. It can get very confusing when you make two or three at once. Here is an oldie but a goodie on banana style baits. lots good info. You may find something helpful. If not, still a great read. Good luck do to you down at the water. http://www.tackleunderground.com/community/topic/13043-new-banana-lure/?hl=%20australian%20%20lure
  17. Nice looking baits jonister! We really need Dieter's guidance on these lures. They look very similar to Australian style banana lures. Especially, the top lure in the side profile photo. This lure has no belly so your ballast is going to be high in the bait . Dieter has made many of these style lures. He definitely could help. The little one on the left in the same photo appears to have a long bib in relation to the line tie. Then the chubby guy on the right, doesn't look too bad other than being off center. Each appears to have it's own set of problems. How do they sit in a pale of water? I sometimes copy commercial baits. I will weight my copy so it sits in the water just like the commercial bait. if you have weighted each of these lures the same despite their different shapes and bibs( same as in same size ballast), this could be part of the problem. They should all sit straight with a nose down orientation.
  18. First select more reply options tab next to the post tab just below and to the right of this entry box. Next, use the choose file tab to select files from your hard drive. After that , select attach this file. Finally, add to post. Here is my first finished bait . It suffered from this condition . Bib too long, tie too high and ballast too little. but it did swim by bending that line tie down on the bib. I have no idea where that bait is now. Too bad, I suffered greatly in the making of that one. We ( me, my wife Digna and our three kids) were staying at our camper on Douglas lake when I decide to put the topcoat on the bait late one night. Somwhere( not TU), I got the idea Minwax polyurethane makes a good topcoat (bad idea). Anyway, around midnight; after everyone had gone to sleep, I popped the lid on that baby and began to dip. It was october, so the evening was quite cool. While I was out enjoying the brisk cool air dipping my first bait, i had another brilliant idea. This baby would dry much faster hanging from one of the heat ducts in the camper. I remember hanging the bait and thinking this wasn't going to take long once that heater kicks in. It kicked in all right and my wife (Digna) kicked me and my baby(lure) out as the aroma of that poly soaked lure filled our little camper waking everyone up. I'll never forget her exact words, " What the hell is that smell." quickly followed by " What were you thinking!". needless to say, baby and i slept on the porch that night.
  19. Sounds like you have a deadstick condition. My first guess would be the line tie is too high but impossible to say without seeing the bait and knowing how it is weighted. Try bending the line down towards the bill as far possible and see if that gets some action. If it does, you could add a second line to the bait where the bill meets the body or just in front of this spot. Another tuning option is to sand down the bill . Right now everything is in equilibrium.
  20. Hello jonister What do you plan on using for your topcoat? Airbrush paints work but can easily get away from you when using a brush. They tend to be thinner than an acrylic folk art paint. If you find the folk art to be too thick it may be easily thinned with a demineralized water and alcohol mix. I top all my baits with a two-part epoxy. I really like the finished look. I use a one formulated for tabletop use but it requires a turner. Devcon 2ton glue is a great alternative to get started without the need of a turner. The result will be close to that of a tabletop two part epoxy. Good luck with your project. Would like to see your progress if you'd like to share as it comes along. Vic

    Small Fry

Hi bill Thank you. LOL, This is what happens when you have no idea what your doing and no one around to make you stop but lots of fun. Great to see you again!

    Small Fry

Thanks Ben. As much as I like the process, I love the people most of all. It's great to see some familiar faces.

    Small Fry

Paulownia covered in acrylic and finished with two part tabletop epoxy. Custom bill and stainless hangers complete the lure. First bait in a couple of years. Really nice to be back making my own baits again.
