Like markinorf, I too like bone. I was using this bait in bone this weekend on a clear lake and had very good results. Best fished early low light and cloudy conditions. I have seen some really nice fish with this bait and color. Friend was using foxy shad and too had several fish but they seemed to miss more than with the bone.

Adding heat should shorten the dry time with the envirotex. This can be done by heating the room where your turning or heating the envirotex before applying. Some experimental test runs  will be required if heating the envirotex before applying. Too much and it will harden before you get it applied. Just seconds in the microwave goes a long way.

  3. Looks good Ben.

I would still flip my piece of wood and mark it twice just to be sure the wood piece your working with is square. If not, that line will go apart and come back together again. I am often working with bits that are not square and for this reason I really like my little block. The pencil rarely hits the middle but the space between the lines I know is always the middle. And really, that is all I am after.

Thanks again for posting the videos. I do have a bullet weight under the thread. Spinner works great. But I wanted the bait to fall evenly. Now it sinks head first. I am thinking more weight might get the back of the bait to sink faster. I am locking down the rear weight with the feathers in hopes it sill reduce the lure spinning. More weight may allow faster speeds without the bait spinning.

I was thinking today as I was driving around town with the lure hanging out the window I have to install a spinner rack on the car.

  5. Thanks Bill.

Northern's baits definitely have fish and fisherman appeal. I too have been looking for some time but when I saw the tutorial I pulled the trigger.

I took this bait out for a test drive today. All those feather looked great with tons of movement. Lots of little quivers with each turn of that colorado blade. Only had about 10 minutes at the duck pond but the bait did draw a couple of strikes from small bass but no hookups. I was surprised by how buoyant the bait is on initial dip. I should have used more weight for sure but worked good for a slow rolled bait.  To keep it down, the speed has to be limited more than I like. I am assuming more weight will give more speed at deeper depths.

Hope you get a chance to take yours out tomorrow. Good luck! :yay:  I am really happy with this one. :)

Thank you for posting this great tutorial by Northern Scripture. :yay:  I have been studying for the past three days and put my first spinner together tonight. Really enjoyed the experience.

@Northern Scripture. Thank you for making the video and sharing how it is done. Awesome!!!!! :worship:  :worship:  :worship:  :worship:  :worship:  I know I am going to catch fish with the baits I create with the lessons you have shared here.

    Thank you!!!!

Here is a look at the bait.......

They both look good Mark. If I understood correctly, you changed the shape a bit on these new baits by giving them a v profile in addition to the line tie position and ballast adjustments?

To add photos directly one has to select more reply options tab bottom right of reply page. Then one will be provided the attach file option at bottom left of reply box. Pretty much same from here as uploading pictures to gallery.

One of my favorite combinations too. My brush technique was inspired by splatter paint patterns. Looks real good!! :yay: Thank you for sharing the pic. I find a splash of yellow on the belly instead of red is pretty effective too.

I have never used spray cans but I know some really cool effects can be created with them. Here is a bait done with spray cans from the 60's by Boots Anderson. Simple but effective. I like how the overspray shoots down the belly.

Thank you Dieter for the lengthy and very informative explanation.

:worship:  :worship:  :worship:  :worship:  :worship:  :worship:

I know I will get some milage out this information both as a lure builder and fisherman.

    :worship:  :worship:  :worship:

    Thank you!!!!

    :worship:

I was reading yesterday in a recent fishing magazine that lure size selection is one of the most important selections a fisherman can make. One has to ask what size are the fry they are eating? Then try  to match as close as possible. This information goes perfectly with your explanation of the seasons.

    Thank you!!!

    :yay:

Though I have not seen the bait your talking about with the wide x action, my thoughts are to tighten the action of this bait I would try moving the line tie closer to the bill. Maybe even moving the line tie to the bill.  Moving the line tie closer should  help. If not an option, shortening and narrowing bill may help too.

  11. Mark

I think it is a part of the formula for this baits action. I have not tried it but i am thinking moving the line tie  to the nose of the Pfeffer would kill most of the baits action. moving it further back from the nose would lead to a bait with the tendency to blowout.  The front(nose) of the bait is acting as a bill on the bait. The two gliders I made have the line tie right on the nose. These baits hunt some when slowly reeled but lack the little wobble the banana has to its action. One of the gliders is weighted much the same as the Pfeffer and nearly as wide but shape and line tie location are producing an entirely different action. I also think width of body, body shape, line tie location and placement of ballast are having some effect on action; though some , if misplaced , can be catastrophic.

  12. Thank you Dieter for the videos of the manta. It too seems to have a fast turn. 90 degrees on one twitch but I see what you mean by the fin keeping the bait from spinning and focusing the baits energy forward. that is something i am very much interested in. Plan on doing some experiments eventually in this area too.

I studied most of the gliders on the lure making page. Most of them are two weight gliders. I think the Heiddy is the exception with one central weight. I made two gliders. One similar to yours Griffond . Looks very similar to the Heiddy but I made mine with two weights. I made it with two weights after my first attempt with a single weight turned to easy for my taste. Both lures have a nice hunting s pattern when slowly reeled but the two weight was a touch less turney but still still did not get the long glide I was hoping for. Both baits are made from aztec deck board or a similar product. I have to thank JBlaze for this piece I am working with. I like it as a bait but hate working with it. Hard hard hard hard . But makes a great bait. I used it mainly because it was heavier than the paulownia I normally use for baits. Anyway glad to report both baits catch fish . Sad to report one is lost to the lake. Infact both caught fish on their first trip to Douglas lake within the first 1/2  hour of fishing them. I considered any catch a good one with conditions tough as fish are supended now and . Not much action on top to be seen and not much on bottom. I think I got lucky . Here is a couple photos of the baits with their catch. The brown Heiddy  looking bait is the two ballast lure . I fished it the first day and like I said it caught a fish right away. On day two this bait caught a fisty bluegill smaller than the lure and day three I lost the lure in a freak accident .  :pissed: managed to save the rod but the lure is gone. With it gone, I started using the second lure which happens to be the first glide I made with one central weight. Guess what it too caught a fish right away. Neither are exactly the action I wanted but the fish did not mind. I will keep trying to make myself happy anyway.

I ran out of time to paint these baits proper before my little vacation to the lake. So, I employed some of Mark's down and dirty painting techniques. Grabbed a LAST MINUTE  .75 cent bottle of clear glitter nail polish at the checkout at the dollar general just before we reached the campsite. I had my topcoat but was really desperate to come up with something to paint these lures with . The foam board was white already so no base coat was needed. Best I could do was some left over crayons from one of our visits to the steakhouse. The kids were kind enough to loan me a couple. I can't argue with the results  :D

  13. They look great Dieter!

Really glad you were able to capture the action from the information. :yay:  All the Pffiefer bananas had the hunt in the different sizes too. I liked seeing that too from your lures. Thank you for sharing.  I think the shape is the secret to to this lures action . It means, It doesn't have to be perfect ; just close enough to count.

Your other lures are inspiring as well. I liked seeing the different actions that are possible with lures and the collection you have there showcases several actions. Nice to see. Seems you have figured out which work best for your local pike at different times of year. I wish I knew so much about my local bass but your lessons are helping.

Thank you  :worship:  :worship:  :worship:  :worship:  :worship:  :worship:

  14. Looks great Dieter!! Thanks for sharing,

I was comparing the action of your glider to the rapala twitch. Your bait makes a a full ninety on one twitch and the rapala seems to take two then changes direction on the third.

What advantage would you say those fins provide?

  15. @ fatfingers

This thread has inspired my first attempt at a glide bait.  Right now I have 2 3/4 in long and 1/2 in wide bait that is a little heavy. Very little hang time. It turns too easy when twitched and a very short glide if any. What is does do well is walk the dog under water as slowly reeled.

Problem there too; it also blows out easily if reeled too fast. Still much to learn on these style baits.

I wondered if you had a link to a video of the action you consider good for fish catching?

  16. Your welcome and don't worry I'll be asking hard bait questions since I'm a soft bait guy so I'm quite sure we'll be even. I just dropped a ton of money on an airbrush (2) and all the necessary gear as I'll be laid up for months after spinal fusion, can't wait

Sorry to hear about the spinal fusion. I assume it will make life better than it is now. Surgery and sitting around for months isn't fun either. Hope everything goes according to plan with minimal pain.

Sure thing on help with hard baits. Glad to help anytime.  :yay:
