  1. Just saw this video on the Corpus Christi Caller newspaper. Thought I'd share it with you. He has a cool device for rotating his lure while painting it.
  2. Any thoughts on this stuff. It's a two part treatment, $53.00 for the quart of bottom coat & $96.00 for the part two top coat. Their web site says it can be used on wood, plastic, metal, concrete etc. http://www.youtube.com/embed/IPM8OR6W6WE?feature http://www.ultraeverdrystore.com/
  3. quickdraw, I see that you are in the Southwest, so I guessed Arizona and looked on-line at HomeDepot in Mesa. They have Red Cedar. Here is a link to a 4 x 4 x 8 split rail. http://www.homedepot.com/p/t/100093027?catalogId=10053&langId=-1&keyword=red+cedar+2+x+4+x+8&storeId=10051&N=5yc1v&R=100093027#.UV-XdJNItrN
  4. I am using both Red Cedar & Basswood for large Lake Trout lures. I tried PVC decking and the sanding dust made me very sick. The difficulty I find with Red Cedar is that when drilling the holes for the line tie or hook hangers, that the drill bit tends to wander when it strikes the denser annual rings, so I have to hold the wood tight as well as the drill and steer it straight. The Red Cedar sands faster than the Basswood but has more grain than Basswood. I find the Red Cedar more "water repellant" than the Basswood, The finish (D2T topcoat, Createx, D2T as a sealer) cracked on a few Basswoods, but not often. I figure I must have missed a spot when doing the original seal. Red Cedar is available at Lowes and Home Depot. I don't see any difference in the behavior of the lures, both woods seem to have the same action. I was wondering if anyone has had any experience with Redwood? Any pros or cons?
  5. For what it's worth, here is a side by side comparison of Solarez topcoat vs. D2T topcoat, both on top of Createx. D2T on the upper lure.
  6. I found an issue with the the wood breaking when I tapped a nail through the Solarez treated wood on a jointed bait's hinge. The wood inside the drilled hole becomes so hard from the Solarez seal coat that the hinge nail breaks the wood rather than pass through. Up to now I have used D2T with no breaking issues at the hinge. I broke two lures doing this. So on my next jointed lures I re-drilled the hole, sealed the hole with super glue, and inserted the the nail.
  7. Here is my first attempt with Solarez as a wood sealer. The wood is Red Cedar. When I applied the Solarez with an acid brush my shop temperature was about 67 degrees, so the rez was rather thick, and I saw a lot of brush marks, so I put it on the drying rack and spun it for about 10 minutes, the brush marks disappeared. I noticed that the slot I cut for the lip didn't have enough coverage of the rez, it was to thick to flow inside, so I microwaved some to thin it, and it went into the slot nicely. After two more minutes of additonal spinning I decided to cure it by putting it outside, my UV light hasn't come yet. So I left it on the drying rack and put the whole thing outside and let it spin while it cured. The sky was overcast, temp. 36 degrees, 48 % humidity outside, altitude 7000'. We have a high amount of UV because of the altitude (lots of sun screen used here). After 4 minutes outside the surface was totally dry and I have a nice shinny finish, no hazing that I can see. The lure has more glossy look than the picture shows. I have been using D2T in the past and I'd say this finish is just as good. The odor of the Solarez reminds me of fiberglass resin, only not as strong or offensive. Next step will be to submerge it overnight to test the sealing quality. Then onto to a Createx paint job.
  8. http://samfishing.fi...cPath=74_73_190 If you have Google Chrome toolbar installed on your computer it will translate Finnish to English for you. I went to the site and experimented with the purchase of some lips and their purchase checkout process. It looks like they ship world wide, USA is in their drop down menu, so I assume you can buy from them. The translation program also converts to US dollars.
  9. Thad, can you try that process , Createx & Solarez, on a piece of wood, to see if you get the same result?
  10. Muskyslayer, Can you give details about what black light you are using? Manufacturer, model number, etc.
  11. What kind of brush are you all using to apply the Solarrez? Can it be cleaned and used again? If yes, what is the solvent you use to clean?
  12. When I rotate the bait the colors pretty much remain in their area, there is a little change but not much. Where the blue on top meets the gold of the middle the colors don't change. Where the gold middle meets the silver bottom there is more of a change.
  13. Cab anyone tell how this finish was applied ? Is this painted, printed, or something else?
  14. Is inhaling the dust from "plastic" PVC dust any more hazardous than wood dust?
