  1. I have a large number of lures to refinish this winter with precise stenciling so I made a holder with Loc-Line parts today. You can easily configure it for multiple hands. Kits go for around $35 (sparkfun.com) or you can get individual pieces from Grainger and make whatever you want. I finished it with a nice base (piece of scrap aluminum) but I would have probably just used a 2x4 otherwise. Fly vises are great but make sure it is adjustable for heavy gage wire. I know this is overkill but I like messing with this stuff as much as the lure making itself.
  2. If you remove the lure very slowly from MCU, (10 seconds or so) it will draw the excess off. I actually use a drill press to do this. I usually do batches of 10 lures at a time and hang them in a food dehydrator (same as using a hair dryer but with better temp control) to get the MCU to off gas the Toluene (solvent in DN) as quickly as possible. I get perfect results. I even recoat 3 times about 25 mins apart.
  3. I came to this forum doing this exact thing. I was refinishing P-line laser minnows last year. Scuff the factory clear coat, airbrush your acrylic color, MCU topcoat. (I upgrade the eyes and use 3 coats MCU for salt). Use search for details.
  4. Ray, My last effort included a few layers of cardboard like what you would find on the back of a notepad in place of your Lexan. I used wire ties around the can to hold in place. It absorbed a little bit of MCU and made a nice seal. I also use 2 screws on opposite sides of the lid. One hole lets the Bloxygen in and the other lets the air out. I put a few drops around each top screw to ensure a seal. Remove the top screws, then the bottom to dispense, replace the bottom screw, Bloxygen in one top hole for several seconds, replace both top screws, done. MCU storage is critical but not difficult. Just remember that whatever you removed from the can has a shelf life which is why I recommend doing batches with MCU.
  5. I'm making salt water spoons and use 3 coats of MCU. 10 lures = 30 dips. It takes nearly a month to fully harden but it is tough as nails.
  6. +1 for Dick Nite and tapping the can. I wait to do batches of 10 lures and discard what was tapped. If you want to do just 1 lure, I would try something else.
  7. I've tried tape and decals. It's much thicker than the foil in the video, leaves an edge and doesn't conform well to round surfaces or fine details. If you do get it to adhear to a round surface, Solvent based paint or top coat can cause it to peel up around the edges.
  8. I paint over holo foil. Great effect. I use scotch brite pads to lightly scuff the clear finish and not ruin the foil. http://www.tackleunderground.com/community/index.php?/topic/27948-how-to-foil-a-jig-like-this/
  9. I agree. My initial effort was to pour my own but the foil delima made buying pre-foiled "blanks" appealing. I don't sell lures so the quantities didn't justify the effort. I am currently having trouble finding a cost effective suitable "blank" so I am revisting the casting and foiling idea. I have never poured but I am happy to help find a foiling solution.
  10. Are you making jigs like what is in your avatar pic? Those look like P-line laser minnows. I have been working on this for a year. My solution has been to buy silver casting jigs with foil already applied for a few bucks each. Lightly sand then customize the color, eyes, quality top coat.
  11. Try a bank of tubes to straighten out the flow.
  12. Interesting. I planned on putting a few layers of aluminum tape on the area to tap.
  13. Giver and taker here but I haven't given much personal info. 41 yrs old. I grew up fishing bass and crappie in the Midwest but didn't fish much after high school. I married after college and her family is into scuba which in turn got me into fly fishing. I started to tie flies for both salt and fresh water. I got back into spin gear recently chasing shore Albies in the North East. Successful lures my friends and I used were discontinued and I decided to create my own. Thanks to the people here, I managed to weigh in the first Albie in a team event in Sept with a lure I painted myself
