  1. Very interesting. I didn't think I would learn so much so quick. Thanks all. It's for musky, BTW.
  2. First, I've read somewhere that certain plastic cups can be dissolved in acetone to yield the same properties as Propianate in a seal coat application. OK, but does anyone know which cups? Or do I just have to experiment? Second, is there anything else that can be substituted? Like say expanded poly styrene (white Styrofoam)? That would be great cause I'm always throwing that away. My reason for asking is that I have not found anyone in my travels who even knows what Propianate is... nevermind stock it. I suppose I can order Pp online, but don't want a large quantity yet. Shipping direct from Us to Canada is possibly a logistics issue, not to mention costly.
  3. Ya it's easy enough to search for electroplating in terms of 'gold', 'chrome', 'nickel' etc... I guess what I'd like to know is.. What is the chemical or material that is being deposited on gold to appear 'red'. Is it a metal, acrylic, resin, ink, dye? This is where I run into a wall. What do the commercial hook makers use? Is it a secret?
  4. Dang, I meant to post this in the wire bait forum. Doh!
  5. I'm under the impression that red plating goes on over gold. (?) If that is true then I need to figure out if there is some way I can do this myself or have someone do it for me. I have shwack of gold plated hooks (mainly wire jig hooks) that need to be red. Any ideas? The first plating company I contacted suggested I powder coat them. Not what I thought would be the answer. The reason I'm considering this is that my buyer doesn't want ANY gold hooks. They only want bronze or red. This is the first time I heard of such an anti-gold preference (for walleye). Mind you, I'm fairly new in terms of fishing experience. I'd like to hear others thoughts on 'gold' hook preferences.
  6. These are great suggestions. I asked for "universal tint" at the local hardware store. No luck. He'd never heard of the stuff. Will keep trying.
  7. Thanks everyone. I've learned a ton already just lurking. Extremely cool site. Wish it worked with my Tapatalk app on my Samsung S5.
  8. I want to experiment with adding color to some epoxy. I'm NOT using it as a top coat, but more as a filler and adhesive. I expect the glue to run ooze out of the hole when I insert the hook shank and think it would look cool if it was 'red'.. Ideas I have are ....a drop of food coloring or red ink into the epoxy. It will be a very small (accent) and I am not very worried about blemishes or strength. Any suggestions?
  9. Hello All, It's high time I introduced myself and wade in to the murk. I've enjoyed lurking here for quite awhile now. I'm obsessed (wife's word) with the idea of tackle making. And at the same time, a little paralysed by the endless paths a person can take. I only started fishing (really) about 4 years ago after finding myself laid up for awhile from ankle surgery with nothing to read except fishing magazines. The incident was taken a sign to 'slow down' a little. Shortly after we bought a nice family fishing boat... even though I've lived near Lac Seul (NW Ontario) for almost 20 years. My wife grew up in this area and loves fishing. Our 4 year daughter loves the boat. A great fit. Now that I fish (walleye), I can't believe I wasted all those years. What started as a bit of tackle here and a bit of tackle there... ended up in a basement full of craziness. It's mainly a distraction from work stress and so far it has really worked well for me. Coincidentally, I've been hoarding materials like cedar for years before finally realizing that I need to 'make tackle' with it. Then I bought a neighbour's entire inventory of spinner and jig supplies and equipment. I've been scrounging lead. (I'm up to 1000 lbs of lead). Some 20 molds (thanks Painter1). Lee pot. etc. etc. Recently, I got some starter supplies for soft plastics and musky spinners. (I don't fish Musky, but have friends who do. I don't intend to get sucked into THAT vortex.) Heavy boxes from LPO show up on my doorstep every now and then. Stuff to experiment with over the winter. But I'm to the point where I have to actually start doing something instead of just thinking about and planning all the time or my wife will have me committed. Lol. The 12' x 14' heated shed in the backyard will become a semi-permanent 'lab' in a month or so. It needs better lighting and ventilation yet. Then I will have a safe place to play and spray stuff that really has no business in the basement. So, thanks everyone for sharing all the great info that I've come to enjoy reading here on TU. It is the source of much inspiration. I will have some questions for you soon. kmer
  10. I haven't been able to use Tapatalk for this site. Not sure what I'm doing wrong. Every other forum I subscribe to seems to work fine.
