  1. So I finally got some details hammered out with a local scheels store to start carrying some of my lures. I ordered some clear boxes of various sizes. The problem I’m running into is getting the insert made. I basically just need my logo and some space to write the color and style of lure. Any ideas of a print shop that makes something like this?

Use a kitchen hood.  They have explosion-roof fans, to prevent grease fires.

I've racked my brain more than I should have to not come up with a range hood for ventilation.  What an awesome idea.  I've went through inline duct fans, box fan in the window, open window and currently have two computer fans propping the window open.  Either way, dipping kbs with a mask on and the fans in the window just don't clear out the fumes.   Did you have to wire in the range hood or do they make plug in varieties

  3. After a batch is done, I pull all the wire hangers and use a small wire cutter to basically score the base of the hanger.  Then I use my smallest drill bit to drill out the hook hanger.  Some baits, like jackal tn60 and live target golden shiners, have really shallow hangers so you have to be careful not to hit the paint/bait.

I was just suggesting if you were looking at speeding up drying times not spraying it in addition to it. Spray a quick flash coat, let dry 2-5 mins, then re-coat. dries pretty quick. I think KBS takes a little while longer to dry when sprayed but i have not done that. I am old school, just dip and hang.

I hear ya.  I've looked at the two part urethanes as well.  KBS is a little more spendy per volume but I figured I could just keep it to one type of topcoat.  I appreciate the insight.

  5. I'm already using a respirator when dipping lures and spoons.  I would shoot this in the detached garage with plenty of cross ventilation.  Since I'm already using kbs as the final top coat, why the two part urethane?

    And thanks in advance, DingerBaits

  6. I've made the switch to KBS last fall and production time really has increased for me.  I'm getting the the point where I'd consider myself a high-volume painter and every step counts when trying to get baits to customers, especially the ones that wait til the last minute to order.  Although KBS cures quickly and is virtually dummy-proof, I can still see where some steps can me eliminated that are causing time delays.  For instance, I have to clean the hook hangers after each coat so it doesn't build up enough to peel paint.  I think spraying kbs would help eliminate that and speed up my production.  So my question is, who is spraying KBS and what are you using for a ratio?  I figure I'll just get an small volume HVLP detail airbrush and get things started.  Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks a lot for the info!!!

I don't have exact measurements  but I do use some createx thinner with it.  Start with 2.5 oz of white, dump 10 g of powder (or start smaller), and thin to a proper consistency.  I do have to bump my air pressure up a bit to pass the particles through a .3 mm tip on my iwata hp-cs.

Do u spay on? Our brush with hand? Also is that a topcoat after other colors and detail works done?

I have a separate bottle of it mixed that I spray on.  Three coats seems to do the trick.  Then I paint my patterns.  I top coat with kbs or e-tex depending on how much time I have to finish the lure.

  9. no bubbling on the first pass.  I hung around a bit to dab the glob of clear off the nose of my lipless baits.  I was satisfied enough that I ran 3 dozen baits through this morning.

I didn't turn these at all per recommendation.  It's when you have excess material in one spot that you'll get bubbling.

  10. Just wanted to throw my $0.02 in.  I just tapped my first can of KBS diamond top coat.  I have been using etex for two years with pretty good results.  If the mixture if off just a little bit or temperature in the room changes, I might not get a good cure.  I also have to turn every lure after painting on the etex.  It takes almost as much time as painting does.  I decided to try KBS after asking with some other painters in my area.  First impression, quick process, quick cure, horrible fumes.  I will have to do some time of ventilation in my lure room.  In the North Dakota winters, I will expect the room to cool of very quickly, unfortunately.  I won't be afraid to switch my entire process over to KBS.

Of 1500 lures to prime how many do you really need to start with.  I hope that you thought this out because 1500 lures takes up a lot of room and smell. You might only need to do a hundred at a time, then you are talking about a different spray method, so figure what you need to start with and take it from there.

You're spot on wayne, I don't need all of them done right away but I do have enough hangers to handle that many.  It's nice not to have to restart the basecoat process once a batch gets done.

  12. I'm looking at 1500 blanks that need to be base coated before this winter season quickly arrives.  I've been toying with the idea of using a bigger air brush, even a gravity fed gun used for automotive jobs.  Do any of you use a large capacity airbrush for base coating?

  13. I use the bag and card method.  90% are shipped in either bubble-wrap envelopes or flat rate boxes.  Never have had a hook come through and a pack of 100 bags is cheap along with the cheap business cards from vista print.  I keep coming back to getting boxes to make things look a bit more professional, but a fisherman isn't buying a packaging.

  14. I apologize for the delay in reporting back.  The issue I was having was the trigger.  Didn't think a guy could wear one out but it's working like a champ with a new one.  I still like my iwata better but at least I have a spare now.
