Love that scale technique! How much time does that add to the process? Thanks, Mark

    Striper Surface Lures

Finished 3 walk the dog/ surface gliders recently. They are hand carved from poplar, 2 1/2"- 092 wire screw eyes, finished with createx and polytranspar paints and etex clear coat. About 6" long and 2oz. If you look close you'll see some progression starting from the back to front. I started rounding and tapering tail transition, moved line tie to bottom and on last bait on left bottom flat in front hoping for a planing effect. First two tested great, haven't tested the last one yet. Can get a nice walk the dog action and when I'm patient enough can get a nice side to side glide. Can also rip it across surface for a nice action. Can't wait to try them on spring stripers! Mark

Thanks for the tips. I have to try this out...

    Ready for foil

Ahh ok. I could see how leafing foil would work well for that. I've used it but not on a textured surface. Mark

    Ready for foil

What kind of foil do you use over that? Can you use hvac tape or is that too thick? Thanks, Mark

Incredible. And that goes for all that you have posted recently. Did you bevel the front edge of the lip on this one? mark

Love it. Amazing paint. I take it you have some clear coat in between layers of paint?

Love the large pupil on the eyes too. Great lure. Mark
  12. I'm certainly no expert but I do use polytranspar paint and etex together. One thing I always do is spray the lure before topcoat with etex gloss spray. Seems to work well for me. Haven't had any issues like you describe. Good luck, Mark

Outstanding! I love that kind of Mountain Dew green.
  14. Don't have an answer to your question but that is a great looking bait. That scale pattern looks similar to a pattern I've seen on Salmo lures. Good stuff. Do you know who the maker of that bait is?

Great tip. Never tried that. Thanks!

    14 inch cedar musky bait

That's awesome. That fin is perfect. I have a problem getting consistent results with stencils. A 14" bait, that's cool! Great job.
  17. I use all flex coat supplies when working with etex. Syringes, cups, stir sticks. I also use these self sealing inserts for part a and b bottles. Just thread them in and stick syringe in to draw out resin. They work great and keep things neat.
  18. Eastman, i know in the past when I've put too much etex on a lure it built up on the belly similar to your pic. What helps me is to just slow the whole process down. I take both parts out with syringes, put them both in a small mixing cup and start mixing slowly with a mixing rod. Try not to mix too fast or you will add lots of bubbles. When it starts to turn clear I set it down and get my epoxy brush ready and also lay down a square piece of aluminum foil on my bench. Mix it again thoroughly, scraping edges. I hold cup at an angle so it's always running downhill as i mix. Once it's mixed I pour it out on a square piece of aluminum foil. I move the foil around to move epoxy and also breath on it at the same time and that takes just about all of the bubbles out. Then using a filbert shaped brush I apply epoxy to lure working from head to tail. I try to make side to side strokes with the brush to keep it all even. Again work slowly. Don't be tempted to use all the epoxy, just use what's needed to cover the lure. Most times I'll have to remove a little epoxy from lip area or from the belly hook hanger. If there are any bubbles left just breathe heavily on them and that will pop them. That system works for me. Hope that helps. Mark

    cedar baits

Awesome. You have the proportions of that bait spot on. I've been working on a small crankbait pattern and found that working in a small scale for me is difficult. Great job. Mark
  20. Thanks. Yes pearl braid. I got a couple meat locker boxes from feather craft. Nice boxes. Mark
  21. Starting to think ahead to June Striper fishing and have been tying some poppers and crease flies. Fun stuff. These are basically bobs bangers but I cut the bottom of the head flat which gives a much better swirl or wash as opposed to a splash. Did real well with these last year. Bucktail with lateral scale flash, estaz body, 3/4" foam head cut flat on bottom and wrapped with lure tape.

    Cedar craw 1.5 squarebill

Interesting technique, you have it dialed in. I've tried a splatter technique using a toothbrush for creating vermiculation on duck decoys. I bet that would work on lures too. I like that mottling effect you created. Mark

Love the colors. Is that black splatter paint over top? Looks sweet. Mark
