  1. For those who use resin, would the ratio of microballoons to resin make a difference?
  2. Ah i see. Thanks for sharing! I just drew out the outline on paper, cut it out, and then cut out the shape from molding clay. After that I smoothed out the edges. I guess the template idea would make it a lot easier to make the fins...
  3. So the template would be in the middle of all the clay/other materials?
  4. Thanks for the write-up! I'll try those things on my next swimbait. Hopefully with all these changes my baits will stay down in the water column. I'm also making a clay bluegill master with a lower forehead to see if it will help the surfacing problem.
  5. Thanks for the input! Should I put the same amount of ballast in both the sections or should I put more in the front? Some people say that the bait should sit head down and some say that it should rest horizontally... As for the bill, I tried that a couple times, but the action was always to "tight" for my liking. I definitely do think that trying to make a swimbait will teach you a lot! My first baits were really bad, but practice makes perfect! It's also very fun IMO to carve all the detailing to make a wood block look so tasty
  6. I haven't really had that problem so far, but thanks for the input! Yeah you should really try out hard swimbaits. They have A LOT of pros. Plus, they don't rip up and... yeah you get the point. I love them
  7. Thanks guys! Right now I'm just trying to perfect my trout. So I should try adding more weight to the front and putting the line tie on the upper lip?
  8. Huh I can't figure it out unless I start another topic and attach the pictures there...
  9. Yeah these are all resin with some lead ballast in the bottom... I don't know how to attach pictures yet...
  10. I'm still pretty new at making my own lures so I still have A LOT of questions lol. Can anyone tell me why my hard swimbaits keep surfacing? They all sink, but when I go to reel them in they just go to the surface again. This is extremely frustrating for me because almost all my SBs do this and I wanted to make some that stay down during the retrieve. Thanks for helping me along TU!
  11. Thanks for the info guys! I just made a bluegill clay master, and it actually looks decent. I'll probably try to see if I can make a better one though. I found that the clay is pretty easy to carve after it hardens, which allowed me to fix any flaws in the original. I do still like wood better so far, but I'm just trying to explore different methods to make my masters.
  12. I have some air-dry water based clay that I bought from amazon. It hardens pretty well after about 5 hours. Do you guys have any suggestions on how to make detailing for the swimbait?
  13. Thanks for the input! I'm using silicone for my molds, so I don't know if the clay will soften. I'll probably the clay a shot and see if I like it... Does anyone have any tips on how to form the clay?
  14. I know it sounds weird, but can it be done? I was just thinking about it the other day and thought that it might be a lot easier than carving a piece of wood for the master. Any thoughts would be appreciated ,thanks!
  15. Thanks for that input! But since the resin is also waterproof would I still have to clear coat it?
  16. Whats up y'all! I was wondering if I have to clear coat the resin inside my swimbait's joints ( this is a pinned joint style). Is this really necessary? I've always had bad experiences with epoxy in the joint. Thanks guys
  17. Finished pouring a couple shad-style swimbaits and was wondering if I have to clear coat the resin part or if I could just leave it bare. I don't want to put it into the joints because it makes them stick...
  18. Alright I guess I'll try putting the hole on the top again. Thanks for the advice everyone! I really appreciate it!
  19. I'm making another mold and was wondering if I should cut the pour hole at the tail end of the lure. As I already said, my other mold kept making big air bubbles in my lures. Will putting the hole at the back make a difference?
  20. HAhahahah lollll! This is my default fishing forum name. I don't even know why I chose it . Meatballs are great though
  21. Ok thanks. So far resin seem so much better than wood!
  22. Just poured my first lure! I was disappointed to see a big air bubble on top, but other than that it looks great! Any ideas on how to avoid this problem in the future? Also does resin rot? I want to test it in the water first before painting
  23. How well does the silicone hold up to bites?
  24. I just made a clay mold and poured the extra silicone into it. Thinking about making tails out of silicone
