Not sure if you figured this out or not. I'm new to this forum. I build a lot of ice rods in the fall\winter. I just use wrapping thread under where the oversized winding check butts up to the handle. Keep adding layers until you have a snug fit. Then apply finishing epoxy. I usually coat over the winding check with the epoxy to give it a smooth transition to the blank.
