  1. Hey TU Folks!

So this is the first billed/lipped crank bait I have attempted and I’m not sure where I should put the line tie. I rarely use these types of baits so I really just haven’t gotten around to making one until now. I’m thinking I should put it at the spot where the lip meets the wood  for this style of bait but I’m just not sure.
     What do you folks suggest?

One follow-up on packaging.  A bait maker that sells at my store also asks for my opinion and observations.  He makes a shaky head style of bait that is totally different, and my testing shows works extremely well.  The problem is that the "blade" is crystal clear and you can't even tell in the package that it is a shaky style bait.  No one even looks at the bait because they can't tell what it does.

I suggested that replacing the clear blade with anything less "invisible" would likely improve sales substantially.

His lures work, work great, but ......................

Packaging is important, at least until a new lure's reputation is known.

Because you mentioned packaging, do you happen to know a good place online where one can order bulk packaging suited to packaging lures?

  3. One of my buddies and I have a standard practice when we fish. We start out using similar baits in profile and action but in colors that are in the opposite end of the spectrum. It is almost always the case that one or the other of us will start catching while the other is less successful. Once we find “the color” that is catching the other will switch to that color. We do this even if we are not in the same boat. A couple of months ago I was in the yak and he was in an inflatable and I got a message from him about an hour into the day, after myself having been unsuccessful, that simply said “green is the color”. I switched to green and it was off to the races:)

If noise is your main concern ( as it was for me too), and you're a little bit into DIY, then a Fridge Compressor is your safest bet. You really can't beat that in terms of "silence". I've built myself one with a tank from a fire extinguisher to protect the compressor from working too hard and the air coming out from the airbrush is noisier than the compressor itself.

    Awesome idea Alex!

  5. I have a six gallon compressor with regulator and condensation chamber. It is loud but my shop is in its own building out behind my house so when it turns on the only person affected by the noise level is me. That said, I'll turn it on and let it fill to capacity and can then I can usually get about an hour of airbrushing in before having to turn the unit on to refill. So for me this has been a pretty good option. It's louder each time I fill it but it doesn't run constantly.

I’ve made a few mega poppers for edict fishing. I’ve had some nice fish explode on it. Stupid Muskies like to explode on the popper, but often end up hitting it away. Lol.
Crazy for me to think a catfish would go for one! Those are cool fish.

anyway. They were a pretty standard popper shape, 10” long. About 1.25” diameter popper mouth. I’ll have to see what info I have on them. I added enough ballast roughly in the middle to make it sit slightly nose up in the water. With t he hook hanger just under the water when sitting. it made a pretty good pop when I give it a hard quick jerk.

I’ll have to get more info once I go to the shop.

Yeah man these fish are nuts. You can see videos of them on YouTube hunting pigeons on the Ebro river in Spain. They swim up to the shore and wait for the birds to venture into the water for a quick bath and then with super speed they just suck them in. Nuts!

  7. @Big EppThanks for the suggestions brother! I'll check out the Smithwick's stuff tonight! Also, nice big bait man! I need to order some hardware to make something like that. Those propellers would likely get 'em interested:)

@4/0 Sure thing man if you'd like to send a picture of that thing I will gladly take a look at it and see if it may be something I could incorporate into my deign!

@mark poulson That is for sure something that would get their attention. I'd even think about putting some rattles in there for added noise. These fish hunt mainly on vibration and smell so the louder/more wake the better.

@eastman03 Sure thing man! Any info would be greatly appreciated. I'm definitely thinking of adding lot of rattles to whatever the final design is.

  8. Hey TU Folks!

Last year I was with a buddy out at a lake that has a good population of Wels catfish. We were out there for pike and I was throwing a Westin Freddy the Frog in American Bullfrog decor. I had removed the bottom treble and only had the single hook mounted to the ass end of the frog because I was throwing into some really thick lily pads and was trying to avoid too many hang ups. That lure kicks up a pretty good wake and moves a lot of water. So on one cast I was retrieving the lure and just as it cleared the edge of the pads heading back into open water there is this loud sucking noise and the lure is gone. After a short fight I had my first topwater Wels catfish, maybe a meter (40 inches or so) long. Not a big Wels by any standard but first one on topwater so special nonetheless. That got me thinking. I have exclusive access to a small  shallow lake that is ruled by four or five Wels, a couple of which are pushing two meters (80 inches or so). I'd like to get out there this summer with the GoPros rolling and some big hand made poppers. I haven't made any poppers yet so I think this will be my next project. I saw Mikko from Solarfall Baits make a big pike/muskie popper the other day so I have somewhat of an idea of what I might do but was wondering if you all would care to share your experiences in making poppers with me. Ballast, body shape, type of wood, etc. I'll definitely have to do a through wire on these because I lost one of these giants last summer and I'm not about to take any chances next time. I'm looking for something that will move a lot of water and make a lot of noise. So what do you all think? How would you go about a project of this nature?

    As always thanks to everyone!

  9. @Hillbilly voodoo @Big Epp of course both of you are top contributors to my success, or at least perceived success, in this hobby and many thanks for agreeing to let me use your screen names.

The channel is called Fishing with Friends and I have the first four videos recorded and edited but they are not published. I released the trailer this week and the first video I think I will release on Sunday but I am taking it slow and making sure that it's done with the goal of being something I would want to watch myself as opposed to being something created with the goal of getting as many subscribers as possible. The logo is attached so should you want to view the trailer you'll know which one it is. You may have to scroll down a bit to find it:) I hear it takes a year or two to get these things to gain some steam.

  10. Hey Tu Folks!

So I talked to Curt (Site Admin) to get the okay to do an episode of my YouTube channel about the TU site and what an amazing and helpful community it is. I want to walk the viewer through the site, how to use it, show them some of the threads, etc., and I would like to say a little bit about those of you who have helped me get better at this hobby. I would do this by showing some of the threads I have posted and the discussions I have had with many of you. I would of course be showing your screen names and talking a bit about how each of you have helped me in a particular way. However, I do not want to do this without your permission.

That said, if you have ever helped me out on this site then this is me asking for your permission to use your screen name in a YouTube video. If you are okay with this please respond to this thread with a YES or NO and I will include as many of you in the video as time will allow.

I apologize for the off topic thread but I figured this would be the best way to go about getting permission from everyone. Of course once the video is created and uploaded I will link it here.

Thanks to you all and Tight Lines!

  11. Okay everyone so I did another bait with lure tape and this time got the result I was looking for. After I poured the resin copy I sanded it smooth and sealed it with superglue. I then sanded again with 320 to smooth out any imperfections caused by the superglue. Then I did a white base coat on the lure and then a transparent base and let that dry for a day. Then I put the lure tape on and let it sit for two days just to see if any bubbles arose. So far there are no bubbles, which, compared to the bubble minefield the last one produced after two days makes me happy. Once I get the bait completed I'll give you all an update.

  12. @UKandyThat would make sense. Also what @exx1976 said about it pulling air out of the wood would make sense. These baits are resin but maybe it is pulling air out of them as well. Hard to figure out and really frustrating because you're really close to a great bait but there is that one little nagging problem you have to work out that keeps you from reaching the finish line.

I poured another on of these just a bit ago so Ill just set it aside for a week or so and come back to it. I'll get back with you guys once I've applied foil again.

    Thanks to you both!

    @Vodkaman any suggestions?

  13. @UKandy @exx1976 so here is one I did a while back that I did with some crappy epoxy that I could just never get to work well. Had the epoxy been good the bait still would have been sub par because, and I don’t know if you can see it in the picture or not, but the foil ended up just full of bubbles after initially going on smoothly with no issues.

Maybe a transparent base topcoat then a wipe down with IPA before applying the foul would work?

  14. Hey TU Folks!

I'm running into an issue that hopefully you all will be able to help me with. I have recently begun using lure tape on some baits just to see what kind of options it gives me and I really like some of the looks I get out of certain patterns. That said, and as seems to always be the case in lure making, it presents a problem. I can get the tape/foil on perfectly aligned, perfectly smooth, heat shrunk to a tight, clean fit, then come back after a couple of hours and there are bubbles popping up in the tape. I'll work out the bubbles, think they are eradicated, then begin airbrushing, and low and behold a bit later there will be bubbles in the tape and I can no longer fix them without ruining my paint job.

Is there anything I can do about this? Any tips you all may be able to share with me?

     Thanks for any assistance!
