DIY fluid bed?

I saw the other past on this but, does anyone have plans/instructions to make their own Fluid bed for powder paint? I haven't seen one up close, but they just look like a chamber to allow air through the bottom of the paint. Seems like you could just rig up an air chamber and create your own size one. I was thinking that a coffee filter may even work as the membrane for air to pass through.
I'm just curious if anyone has tried this.

Shad Shapes

New to the forum and I have enjoyed reading the few posts that I have so far. Anyways, I do a lot of drop shotting for smallmouth in clear water and they love the Yamamoto shad shape baits. I am getting pretty tired of paying $8 per pack and have them last for 1 fish. I am looking to make a mold for them and start pouring them on my own as I can not find a similar bait produced by anyone. My buddy made a mold with Plaster of Paris and it came out pretty good. I am planning on doing the same. My question is this, his mold is not perfect and his baits reflect it. He is fine with it and isn't worried about it. I think that they will work and the baits aren't that bad but have a few minor imperfections. So what can I do to make sure that the mold comes out decent? Also, I will be melting down older and used baits, does that affect anything. I only need green pumpkin and shad color. So any ideas and thoughts would be greatly appreciated. I am looking to have quite a pile of these by time spring comes. Thanks in advance for the help.

Newbie Has Basic Questions

I have just recieved my order of lips for my cranks. I ordered wrong size because I didnt ask here first. So am I to assume that the measurements of a lip are the length x the widest part of the lip? Secondly, the lips that looked like they should be the right size seem to be too thick. Do I sand the lip down a little or do I make the slot bigger or both? I thought that if I sanded the lip down with the Dremel that it would weaken it too much. Likewise with the bait itself. This seemed to be such an easy task at first but I aint so sure now.

General View On Selling Ko's

I just wanted to get an idea of how some of you guys felt about people selling home made lures that resemble lures that are in the market. I guess
This applies to myself. I started making various swimbaits a year ago and fishing them exclusively, and every time i meet someone they ask to see what i use and the response is very gratifiying, they ask if i sell them. This is where i hesitate because i know that what ive made is not of my own design but something i saw on the internet, though not 100% percent a true replica. I usually put my own twist on things and add more detail, different materials for tails and more realistic paint jobs. As all of you know this hobby is not exactly cheap and ive already bought a small wood shops list of power tools and recently a very nice airbrush, my intentions are not malicious and would only sell a few here and there just to bring in some coin to help me keep this hobby going. I guess i just want to hear what the general opinion is concerning my dilema.

Using Electric Stiring Plate For Mixing Propionate Solution

I was playing in the lab at school one day when I decided to try this out. This is a stirring plate with a jar of partially dissolved propionate. I inserted a magnetic stirring bar (which is about 1" long) inside the jar. Pretty simple, the plate spins a magnet and therefor forces the stirring bar to rotate. I'm stirring the solution very quickly right now and it seems to be doing well. I'm hypothesizing a completely dissolved solution in a few hours. If I would have thought a little more in advance, I would have just gradually added pellets to the acetone. Nevertheless, it appears to be dissolving much much faster than just having it sit on a desk.

Since I put the pellets in the solution last night, the pellets formed a "puck" at the bottom of the jar. Thus, when I put
the stirring bar in I had to invert the jar so that the "puck" slowly dripped down toward the stirring bar... quite mesmerizing actually.

Also, I'm trying another mixture as well. 1/3 acetone to 2/3 virgin thinner. The other day I combined what was left in an acetone jar with some from a virgin jar and it looked like the finish came less blemished. Eh, guess and test.

For those of you that suspend your lure in a jar w/ a drop of acetone (to acquire the clear finish) how big of a jar are you using? I've tried this with normal mason jars and it seems to take a very very long time to dry. Also, It looks like half my coating drips off too. The finished lure does have a clear finish, but its a very timely process for one lure. Anybody have a set-up they would mind sharing for doing say 10 lures at a time?

What a great site. I am looking to start pouring some of my own soft plastics. I am only looking to do this for fun for me. Not looking to make money, just looking for something to kill some time during the winter months in Indiana. I am only looking to make the basics like senkos, worms, creature baits, and spider grubs. That's about all I use. However, I have no clue where to even start. I've seen several molds that I would definitely like to try. I have no idea where to buy plastic, how to make plastic, how to produces colors and scents, etc. Where do you all suggest I start?

Wondering how the pros here cut out lexan lips. I've cut a few 1/8 in. lips for my baits close to size then try to use my disc sander but it heats up and makes a blob on the bottom. Wonder if it would be better to buy a few.
Could This Be The Start Of An Injection Machine

I was looking at these "paint pressure tank" from harbour frieght I was wondering if you put a mixer inside and a spout out the side set it on a hot plate or" maybe fit a presto pot inside of it " and hooked it up to the air compressor would you have a plastisol injector? The tricky part would be to control the flow of plastic I am thinking something lie a toggle or push button valve
( at a low psi and yes it does have a safety valve)

For Those Of You Selling Baits

I've seen the subject come up several times on this forum and other forums asking how to figure price per bait. This is the formula that I use and it takes into consideration your time, all of your costs, including electricity, and all other expenses involved in making baits.

weigh a bait
weight of bait X price per lb of plastic(including shipping on plastic)
figure up how many baits you can make in an hour.
multiply the product of weight of 1 bait X price per lb of plastic by # of baits produced in 1 hour.
here's where you take into consideration the electricity, your time, also your flake, coloring and any other components that you use. This figure will vary with everyone so take into consideration what you would have to have for 8 hours of pay for producing the product, electricity for 8 hours. So let's say for example, $100.00 a day.
Add the amount figured from the # of baits per hour to the total operating costs ($100.00 per day). Then divide by the total by the # of baits made in a day (8 hr day). This will give you a price per bait. You need to calculate the Federal excise tax based on this price and add to it. (10%).
Here is an example based on a half lb weight and 250 baits per hour.
.5 X $2.15 (price of plastic per lb) = 1.075
1.075 X 250(baits per hour) = 268.75
268.75 + 100.00 = 368.75
368.75 divided by 2000 (baits per day) = .18 per piece.
.18 X 10% (Federal excise tax) = .198 per piece (in other words .20 per piece)

So the more pieces you can produce in an hour the less cost per piece. This is also why price per lb on plastisol is important. I'd be interested to see how other people calculate their prices. But I've found this formula works best for us.

Guys, I am toying with molding an actual fish. Real newbie questions here.
Planning on using clay as a base, inserting fish, and pouring the POP on top to make a two piece. Can I pour POP on top of clay? What is the type of clay I need to be looking for? Heading to an art supply store in a bit.
