Do I need more glitter or possibably a different shade of green, and I'm using the fine glitter does this make a differance? One other thing I just ordered some more plastic and I got calhouns med instead of soft, I have softener, how much do I use for 4 and 8 oz batches.

Thanks

Trying A Bait Or Bait Style Before Spending The $$$

I am curious how many try out the baits they are going to make prior to spending all the big bucks on the molds. Reason I ask, I have seen a lot of molds out there on the secondary market now, some only weeks old. Baits perform differently when we make them by hand injection or hand pour vs what you get out of a bag from a bigger manufacturer. Mostly due to our limited use of heavy salt.

When bringing on a new bait, I generally like to start out with at least the number of cavities I am going to put into a bag or think is reasonable for my personal use. At 10 baits per bag, many molds can run you $500+ (10 single cavity molds @ $50+), just to set-up a system to do 1 bag of baits per blast.

I have gotten in the habit of making a plaster of paris mold of a similar bait I am thinking of buying the corresponding mold for and fishing that bait for a week or so prior to making the final commitment. Of course, this just goes for molds that are not "ordinary" like a senko-type bait or trick worm style bait. Some that you fish alot, you know you have to have!!!

Here are a few I have recently done to try out. POP is a cheap way to really get an idea of how the bait performs with softer plastic and how the mold may pour or inject.

Made a 6 cavity flick shake bait

Frog

Skinny dipper with hook slot

http://www.ghostbaits.com/new%201644.jpg
Grass craw

After a couple weeks of fishing all of these, I really like the flick shake and grass craw. Not enough to buy the current aluminum molds avaialable in all these baits but certainly enough to continue pouring a few baits up for myself for further testing. I almost bought bait molds of all of the above baits prior to testing. Would have been a mistake on my part.

As a note, I do watch to avoid duplicating baits that are patent protected except for very limited testing purposes. If I like the style/action of a particular bait I test, I will go to an already available mold from the various makers or have a unique design created.

Do you guys go through something like this or just let the "mold monkey" have its way???

Wal-mart Flow-art Acrylic Paints

Gentlemen,
I believe I am ready to begin practicing with my new airbrush. I've had it almost a week and haven't touched it yet. I'm trying to learn all I can before diving in. I have been through almost all 230+ pages of the hardbait forum, gathering much information. So here's my question!

I read several post speaking of the cheap Wal-Mart acrylic paints. I DO NOT want to waste my new Createx paint in the training phase till I'm ready so why not practice with some "cheap" paint. I understand Createx will shoot differently but I will learn that when the time comes, right now I'm just looking to learn the mechanics of the gun....i.e. tempo, flow, air volume, etc. So, anyway I had read somewhere about the method of thinning this stuff. Like a dummy, didn't right it down and now can't find it. Someone mentioned maybe water, denatured alcohol and drops of dish soap????? I didn't quite understand the mix ratio. The Wal-Mart Flow-Art paints I found come in the typical 2oz bottle.

Please help me thin this stuff so I can spray it to begin my practice sessions.

Thanks to some of your advice I have denatured acohol, acetone and laquer thinner on-hand.

Minnesota Girl

Hello, all!
I have been lurking on the forums for a couple weeks and decided to finally register. I'm from far Northeastern MN and fish Lake Superior as well as inland. I'm just beginning to get interested in airbrushing lures (specifically spoons for lake trout) and feel lucky to have found this website. I have an airbrush already because I intended to use it for fine art but never got around to it (I'm an artist working primarily in graphite and pen and ink).
I'm still trying to figure out which paints to use, primers, sealers, etc. so that's why I'm on the forum. I want to avoid the paint peeling or chipping off the spoons, which it does even on commercial ones, as much as possible, but I also have some creative paint designs I want to try out.
I have lots of questions, but absolutely ANY advice for a beginner would be appreciated. Thanks, everyone!
