  1. Hello everyone, this is my first post on here, so I hope it goes well. I've started getting more into carving baits, and I have a few questions for those of you with experience. First off, I'd like to say that I truly admire some of the great talent that I've seen on this website! I hope to get better and improve my baits, and hopefully you guys can help me out. I've designed two lures in CAD already, and they have gone well so far. The first bait is a small ~5-6" swimbait. The second is a huge trout swimbait. As a newbie, I don't know how to weight the lures properly (where to place the weights, and what weights to even use), as well as where to place a joint for the most effective swimming action. Any insight on those two would be greatly appreciated. My large trout lure has unfortunately gotten damaged, from it dropping onto concrete floor. Part of the tail has broken off, so I epoxied it back on. I am wondering if this will be strong enough. Should I have done something different? Also, how thin do you typically carve the fins? I'm using basswood, and I don't want to make them so thin that they're too weak to stay intact (like the tail). I've left the other fins around 1/4" thick, am I able to make them smaller without issue? My other question is about carving the details (gills, fins, scales). I've tried just carving grooves with a knife, but I haven't been able to get the results I'm looking for. I've ordered a Flexcut detail carving kit, and I was wondering if this is the type of tools you guys use for your detailing. Below are pics of the trout. Thanks in advance for anyone willing to respond!
  2. How do I wrap realistic baits? Any suggestion what stuff I should get? I'm new to this. Here's a pic below for sample...
  3. I bought this lure at a flea market without knowing what lure it was. I brought it to Canada and it was catching back to back fish and even broke my Pb pike twice in 45 minutes. But sadly the bill on the lure broke and I am unable to use it anymore. So if you can, please help me identify this lure if you recognize it. Thank you.

  12. so i am designing a mix between a crank-bait and a spinner-bait i am calling it an inspin a lure that should in theory combine the flash of a spinner blade and the look of a crankbait by having a hole drilled right thru it and what i have determined to be a metal insert tube that has the spinner blade on a wire that runs through it what i need to know is what i am capable of using as that wire i found somewhere that piano wire may work but i cant find any info anywhere else other than on aircraft forums and i also need to know the best way to make the insert weather welding, brazing, or soldering i have inventor files if anyone needs them to better understand what i'm talking about i should also say i'm sorry if i messed up the title i have never used a forum before and had no idea what to title it
  13. I using alumilite amazing casting resin white. 10mL equal parts with a scoop and a half of micro balloons in side A and side B. The problem I am having is my resin curing on the one half of my Mold. I noticed while I am mixing the micro balloons in my part B, the liquid is significantly heavier than the micro balloons. So much that there seems to be 1/8” of liquid in the bottom of my mixing cup that won’t bind with the micro balloons. Once I have it mixed with part a and poured in my mould I always find that the last half that I poured tends to have a soft spot, or on my last pour a pocket of liquid that extends the length of my lure . I cut new vents in my Mold, I mixed my resin longer, I’ve added more micro balloons and I’ve also reduced my micro balloons. I’m out of ideas and it’s getting to me. Please help!
  14. Has anyone tried glued Bamboo wood for making Baits. I have applied standard wood bait principles (it was a topwater, lip less crank bait type), first I made my own rattle, then hollowed the inside fitted a wire frame for the hook and line connection then adding the rattle to the front of the bait for weight and wobbles. But after gluing and sealing it (I did not paint it), it kicked back and forth a little, with a kind of weak rattle. I don't what went wrong but I am guessing the 30 lb test was slightly stiff for it, how I came to this conclusion is that when I put thread (for sewing) it kicked a lot better. If anyone can give advice, I would appreciate it. Thanks in advance.

  17. Any one here have info on unpainted swimbait blanks? 1 or 2 joints.
  18. Hi Guys, I recently tried my hands on making a crankbait with foil scales on it, I'm extremely happy with the result. Let me know what you think. I'd love to know if anyone else uses silver foil/tape as well and what technique they use.
  19. The "Got 'er Otter" slow retrieve topwater bait. It started out by wanting a bait that works when others don't. I carved a wood block I found in the garage, then sanded it to the shape I wanted for that perfect wobble. In the back, I used a magnum jig dancer blade, hardware from LPO and tied a trigger tail out of hackle feathers. Then there was the hard part...it took multiple prototypes to get it balanced & running the way I imagined. Once I figured it out, it had a click and wobble unlike any other bait I've casted & just knew it was finally right. THIS is the "Got 'er Otter" by Aaron "Chico" Rodriguez.

  21. Hi guys, first post here. I thought I’d share a swimbait I’ve been tinkering with over winter. Hoping it get smashed come pre-spawn (now only about a month away). About 16cm ( 6 1/4 inches). made from wood. I used the laminated picture method as I don’t have an airbrush (nor the skills to use one). I’ve made a Carp and Smallie imitation and have a Largie getting ready for it’s epoxy coat. Bluegill and Tilapia imitations are next The main idea behind the design was for it to run just off the bottom (when fished off a Caroliner type rig). As it’s buoyant, it actually makes a good surface lure as well – obviously without any weight on the line. Here’s a quick video of it in the pool. Hopefully thing will warm up a soon and I can take it out for some bass.
