    Swimbait, Smallie

16cm wooded glidebait, hinged joint with laminated finish
  2. Hi guys, first post here. I thought I’d share a swimbait I’ve been tinkering with over winter. Hoping it get smashed come pre-spawn (now only about a month away). About 16cm ( 6 1/4 inches). made from wood. I used the laminated picture method as I don’t have an airbrush (nor the skills to use one). I’ve made a Carp and Smallie imitation and have a Largie getting ready for it’s epoxy coat. Bluegill and Tilapia imitations are next The main idea behind the design was for it to run just off the bottom (when fished off a Caroliner type rig). As it’s buoyant, it actually makes a good surface lure as well – obviously without any weight on the line. Here’s a quick video of it in the pool. Hopefully thing will warm up a soon and I can take it out for some bass.

ABT Glide Bait I foiled and painted. This bait has a deep scale pattern in the mold. I applied imitation silver leaf to this bait to compare to the kitchen foil type of my other bait. Attached the leaf to the bait with D2T pressing down with breath and cotton ball. Scrubbed it off with DA a couple times before I got an acceptable job this being one of my first attempts at this procedure. Wanting the silver sides of the natural trout effect I was careful not to get too much transparent white on the sides. Seams much easier to hide due the leaf being very thin base coated edges opaque white to hide color transition. Body paints transparent Createx colors then opaque black for spots and pearlized white for belly. Liked the looks of this one better than the one I foiled with kitchen type foil. Came out with a crushed silver look made for a nice looking silver sided trout. The other bait looked more like I had applied chromed type paints Barry

Here is another version of my resin casted trout model. This one has two screw eyes for the line tie. The two screw eyes generate some different swimming action. You can see the different action in this clip. Tell me what you think. Greetings from germany

  5. Hello to everybody out there! hope the winter has treated everybody well, I know I am ready to get some lines wet up here in the Northeast. New to TU and the lure making world so here is my question, I started making a lure to mimic my favorite saltwater bait and I decided I wanted to turn it into a multi-jointed swimbait, is there a "rule" or ratio I should follow when making the different segments? I want to make sure it has the proper "S" swimming action and figured the size of each segment would make a difference. Tried doing a few searches but came up with nothing so if i missed it some direction would be appreciated! Thank you for any info you can provide! Tight lines

    Light Hitch

Light Hitch does really well in those super clear waters where realistic presentations are key to lure finicky bass!

    bluegill wakebait

This is a wakebait I made painted to look like a bluegill. It is carved from poplar and is made with swivel hook hangers that are pinned in place by the eye screws and the epoxied in. It has a screw lock on the back to atach different tails. The total length with the tail is about 7 inches.

  17. Here's a silicone swimbait I made. The color won't wear off because it's built in! It's a line through top hook.

  21. Hey guys! First time posting, but have been lurking the site for along time, love the information on here. I have been making wooden baits for awhile now, and now I am in the process of making a resin bait, Mostly swimbaits. Although I have not made my first pour I am just running some things through my head that might cause an issue. The baits I am molding are fairly large and have a larger belly. I am concerned that when they hit the water they will flip upside down or sideways, I was wondering if anyone had a idea for keeping their larger resin baits straight up. I have heard of making them thinner at the bottom and thicker at the top but i want to keep the fat belly feature. Is it possible to pour one half of the resin with no MB (The bottom) and the other half with MB (The top). Another possible idea would just be positioning lead weights into the mold. Anything on what has worked for you guys in the past would be awesome!
  22. I've made swim baits with screw eyes and bike spokes but was wondering if anyone has used tyvek to connect the sections in a joined bait. Tyvek is water proof, hard to tear and sounds perfect...anyone ever try it?
  23. Hey guys. I have a question regarding Lexan tails on swimbaits. I have tried to read all associated posts regarding putting tails on swimbaits using the search function, and while I have gleaned some excellent information, I am still a bit confused. So, if I want to make a swimbait with a Lexan tail, I cut a slot in the back of the rear-most piece of the swimbait and then cut the Lexan tail to shape, and I am assuming I pin it in. I guess the question I have is how do you go about painting the tail, and also adding detail such as the fin spines and such? Is this simply painted on and then topcoated before adjoining it to the swimbait? Painted and then attached and then clearcoated? Hopefully you guys can see the jist of what I am getting at. I think the tranlucent looking tails look fantastic, and without pouring a soft tail, Lexan seems to me like the only viable choice, unless you use a Plano divider or a margerine tub top or some other piece of pliable plastic. In each case, just curious how to attach them and get them painted to match the rest of the swimbait. Thanks again in advance for taking the time to read this and share your knowledge. I would still be on Step 1 of any lure making procedure without the help of the knowledgable folks on here.
  24. Been a long time lurker on this site, and figured I'd finally say hello. Name's Kenny, and I've been making lures for about a year now, and I learned a LOT from this site. Still do every time I log in. Anyways, here's a few lures I've done: From the left, we have: a billed wake bait, a suspending multi joint bait, a glide bait, and a lunker punker knock off. Here's a gill I'm working on: And another glide bait: As you can see, I've yet to buy and airbrush, I'm scared to ruin a lure after working so hard to get them this far haha. But I gotta learn somehow. I'm thinking of the Neo CN. Is it a decent starter airbrush? I'm also in the process of making my own silicone tail mold, so I won't have to use other companies tails. Here's some video of my wake bait: And my glide: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8x7efvvB8iM I'd like to get my glide bait to make a wider slalom but I'm not sure how to go about doing it. I know that bigger baits make a bigger slalom, but I don't want to really go past 8.5-9". Just gotta keep tinkering I guess. Wood is Poplar, except the wake bait, I did it in Cedar. 1.5" screw eyes, Owner Hyper Wire split rings, and Owner St-36 hooks. If I get bent out, I'll switch to 41's. Anyway, I just wanted to introduce myself, throw my name out there, and maybe talk lures with some of you guys.
