bassman843
would anyone know the best way to melt down wheel weights to get the metal clip out.
dayooper
We use a turkey fryer and a cast iron pot. Heap the pot full of the wheel weights and melt them all down. Then we take a big magnet and all the clips will stick to it. Wear a good air of leather gloves to remove the clips from the magnet. Also, skim the top layer (slag) off the melted lead and then pour into ingots.
HookUp
Similiar to dayooper Fill lyman pot w/ lead, pour into ingots, and fish out clips with a bent piece of strapping wire (or cloth hanger) and slag with an old tablespoon. sagacious
An old long-handled slotted spoon works well for skimming off the steel clips, and other crud. Good luck, and be safe!
lilcraw
your clips will FLOAT on top of the melted lead use a laddle or like mentioned above a large spoon to skim the top of the melted lead and dip them up, lay them into a cake pan of sorts until cool and discard them. tomcat
i use a extendable mechanics magnet to get them out of my lee pot
WidowMaker
Water will get down between the steel clips and the wheel weight so be carefull. I had some wheel weights that sat in a dry place for well over two years and one of them blew up and emptied a melting pot.
t_miller316
i use a propane torch and an old sauce pan that my wife didn't need anymore. at least i didn't think she needed it anymore. anyway hold the wheel weight with long nose pliers and take torch to it. the lead melts away from clip and u can toos clip away. lead is then in small pieces to drop into lead pot. u will have to skim lead pot of impurities as wheel weights get road grime, wax, etc built up on them over time. I hope this helps p.s. an old coffee can will replace the sauce pan if you do not want to get in trouble.
robbor
I melt'em in a cast iron pot and use a torch also then use both a large magnet with leather gloves and a rag, dropping the clips into a metal buchet with water. And I also use a large spoon and pull them to the side and then up and out. I also use a strainer some times. My problem is i dont really have enough heat. I use all three and switch back and forth but if you can get em really hot the spoon gets the most out the quickest.
