Brshpile
I was wondering how you guys tie your skirts. I have the pen type that is clamped with the rubber skirt collars. How many layers do you use? Also I need some tips on gettting the round rubber through the pen cuase it has nothing to hook onto. Also need the experts on this to tell me there step by step process on skirt making. I have made some but they just dont look right to me. I am putting these skirts on a 3/4 ounce football jig head. Most of what I use is Black w/purple flash and brown and purple. Any help would be appreciated. I have done a search on this topice but there is not much out there on this. gat0r
If it doesn't look right, chances are you don't have enough material. But putting a lot of material through those pen type skirt makers is tough. Call Blake at Naked Bait Co and get his Skirt Expander. This will answer both your round rubber question and the question of how to get more through. I often use 2 1/2 pads (two of one color and 1/2 pad of an accent color) sometimes another 1/2 pad of an accented join color (like 2 brown then 1/2 pumpkin barbwire and 1/2 purple.) Tony Maxwell
I use 2 pads of silicone, along with a skirt making tool I bought many years ago. 2 jaws, similar to a set of snap ring pliers. I use a doubled over piece of SS wire to pull the skirt thru the collar. After I have the skirt in place on the jig or spinnerbait I tie it on with heavy fly tying thread or Size A rod winding thread. I then remove the rubber collar. I usually use two colors for the main body of the skirt, and after tying this onto the lure add a couple of Red strands on the belly and a few dark strands for the back (Top). You can get as fancy as you want tying in the different colors. I usually use red thread.
