TU Etiquette Takers Vs. Givers

Recommended Posts

My name is Jim, I live in Grand Haven MI.

I will be 45 this month, I have a wife and 2 young girls and a 18 yr old step daughter that just made me a grandpa.

I am self employed as a drywall hanger for 12 years and a reptile cage builder for 4 years, I have been a soft plastics guy for 1.5 and want to learn painting of crankbaits now.

I am in my 4th year fishing for bass, I always over do anything I get into

and bass fishing has been my most $ venture yet.

Thanks for all the reply's to posts even if they have been answered 100 times.

My name is Bill , I live in Port Orange FL , 41 years old , married with one daughter who loves to fish and wants to be a marine biologist . I owned a machine shop / gun shop before moving south , now I sell reloading supplies on Gunbroker and Ebay . I've been here 4 years moving from NH where I fished for trout and bass mostly , here I fish saltwater . Right now I make spinners but would like to get into making hard baits and soft plastics . I've been making spinners for about 1 year .

Good Idea. My name is Earl. I'm a 61 year old Aflac manager that had rather be fishing. I decided to try making baits after I saw this site and joined just after the bug crash lat year. I live on Lake Logan Martin in East Alabama, and fish we I want and there is some water available (unlike lately).

This forum has given me a great outlet for creativity and doing something important. We all know making a lure and then catching a fish on it is primal function that we can appreciate. the creativity and talent of most of the folks on this site is incredible.

My only shares so far are some ways to do things such a building your own paint booth for nothing, and saving money by using some common everyday things. I have a new look crawfish lures I'll have finished soon for everyones criticism (comments) soon.

Husky, Mike P here.

I love this forum. The sharing of ideas here is equaled by none.

I've been building since the 60's which corresponds with my age!

I started with jigs as I had a stubborn habit of trying to yank stripers out of the rocks and store boughts, even in those days, got expensive. I was one of the first in my neck of the woods to go to soft plastics.

I have a penchant for molding baits and have had great success with my foamies and now my Resin castings.

I started making poppers and then swimmers and I have to say, nothing beats catching on home mades when others are getting skunked.;)

Hi my name is Tom, but my friends (yes I pay them) call me T-Bone. I live west of the Twin Cities just minutes away from beautiful Lk. Minnetonka. I have been married for 17 years and have one daughter. I have been making lures for 3 years and love it. I create top water muskie baits that have performed well for me and others. I have sold a few in local bait shops but more than anything I enjoy donating them to benefits/silent auctions . I was fortunate enough to be employed by a millwork company who allowed me to purchase their blemished material for next to nothing so my costs are low. Yes I am more of a taker than a giver on TU, and I have recieved some awesome advice, Thank you TU!!

Hi everyone. I'm Bee, 35, from Wisconsin.

I've learned a lot from this site and eventually hope to give back when my knowledge and experience allow me to.

I don't ice fish so I need something to do during winter and making lures sounds like a great idea. I've been doing it for only a couple months. I've made a few duds and one nice swimbait so far. Sure is addicting.

My name is Frank, I am 60 years old and live in Richmond, Indiana. I have been a County Police Officer for 33 years. I no longer work the road I work as Courthouse Security screening everyone entering the Court House. I was a carpenter in the construction business prior and still build pole buildings and about anything else in my spare time. I am raising my two grandkids. I have been fishing for bass for many years and a member of a local bass Club since 1984. I now have time to do other things and have decided to attempt making my own lures. This is all new to me. I hope to be able to learn and give back new ideas some day. I have been researching since becoming a member and buying things as I go. Hope to be making lures soon. Thank you for helping beginners. Without all of you us beginners would be in big trouble.

I'm Bob from N.C., 60 yr old retired fed who loves to fish. I eased into making crankbaits by painting and modifying commercial baits, then started making my own 5 yrs ago. I figured if I can buy $15 baits that won't work right, I can make my own that won't work right for way less :) Well, that was a few hundred crankbaits ago, TU tought me how to do it right, and I'm hooked. I'd still rather be fishing - but making crankbaits is a close second when "they ain't biting" or it's too wet/cold/hot for a lazy man to go fishing. I fish all of mine or give them away to friends, family and poor sods I see wandering by my garage. I love this site; it's Knowledge Central for custom crankbait makers.

Great thread. It sure helps knowing a little bit about everyone

I am forty with two young children and a great wife. I work as a manufacturing engineer at a tier I automotive supplier. I find it hard to get on the water as much as I would like. 90% of the time I am chasing Muskie. The rest is bass, trout, or whatever else is fun. I make up for not getting out much by spending an hour or so most evenings in the garage daydreaming about fishing. I have been making hard baits for muskie for about two years now. I learned everything I know about making lures from countless hours on the net. TU is by far the best source of information I have found. I try to give back when I can. Not having any desire to sell lures, I have no reason not to share “secrets”.

Pete Yake from Iron Mountain, MI. I fish primarily for muskies. I started making my own baits last year and in large credit to the information that I got from this website (taking). Started this winter with making some bucktails. Took awhile to get the hang of making good wire loops so I put a tutorial together on the wire bait forum. Here is a link (giving back)...

ok, great thread.

Stephen also from Twin Cities. aproaching 40 and greying on the sides, i too live close to lake minnetonka which is i believe the 14 largest lake in minnesota, at around 13,000 acers. i fish for everything that swims in our state and try to fish effectivly for each species. i got started in lures by repainting and modifying comercialy made baits. my top fav 5 fish would be flathead catfish, musky, carp, stergeon, and occasionaly walleye and pike. my goals change and evolve. at one point in my life all i wanted was to catch a 50inch musky.now 30lb musky are plentifull in our local waters . no one realy counts these now. i strive instead to make the perfect bait. but have much to learn. unfortunately my bait building is restricted to being frozen in and not opening the windows, and not having tons of cash to dump into this hobby. my current baits i have been working on for over a year on and off every couple of weeks.my pals say it would be tons cheeper to just go buy the most expensive musky baits($300+) and call it even. they are probably right, but learning the hows and whys are priceless.

hello all my name is Brock I'm from Washington originally. I have been in the bay area,Ca for almost 10 years I'm 31 years old. Since I quit driving trains across the delta I now fish it and am a commercial/residential painter by trade. Been bass fishing since I was a grasshopper and fish local tournaments.

Lure crafting and customizing has been a great outlet and this forum has been a big jump start I hope to add to it I've been ruling out quite a bit of stuff that doesn't work. :nono::lol:

First let me say that I admire the eloquence of the previous posters and they are the spirit of creative lure crafting and I'm sure get far more out of fishing than just winning a few bucks or a trophy.

My name is Frank Manuele, born and raised in the lower Hudson Valley of NYS, a few miles north of West Point. Winters are long and being over 55, the aches and pains of getting older are shortening my fishing season more every year. Lurecrafting appeals to my creative side; creating lures that fish bite appeals to my ego; creating lures others can catch fish on appeals to my altruistic side and love of the sport.

I originally started selling glitter because I was tired of one company ripping off crafters and because of that company's poor service. Now I do it because I have a ton of the stuff in my basement! ! Kidding aside, I like all aspects of lure crafting and if people can benefit from my service, so much the better.

I've worked as a medical imaging specialist since 1970 when I was in the military (CT, ultrasound, Xray). I guess taking pictures of guts, bones and babies is kind of creative in a photography sense, and I've always wondered how to channel that into lure modification or making.

I've always been curious how lures could be made more effective and the reasons some lures do better than others. Spike-It and nail polish were the first media I used (Spike-It for dying about a hundred soft plastic baits one winter and nail polish to create nice designs on crankbaits). The modifications seemed to increase my confidence in the baits and therefore since I used them more, caught more. (Maybe it was the modifications ---I'll never know.)

Six years ago, a fishing buddy asked me how he could extend the use of ripped Senkos and I told him that I had been repairing plastics with a hot knife for years. He then wondered about getting into pouring his own and found Lurecraft. I liked his creations from the kit and thought, 'hey, this is really cool!' A handpour fanatic was thus born.

Tacklemaking.com once had a great forum to learn from, but died from owner disinterest. Lluckily TU was born. It's been nice to share, nice to pick up tips and admire the extreme talent exhibited in the gallery. Just like fishing with others inspires ideas, being a part of this site accomplishes the same and there are no other sites in the world that have as much post-and-reply regarding lurecrafting as this one. TU has come a long way and I hope many of the talented members who stopped posting, start to again. It sure makes the long NE winters tolerable!

Great thread, it gives the site a more personal way to get to know some of the brilliant minds!

I'm Alex, from Eagle River, WI. I'm 26, have been fishing longer than I remember, mostly flyfishing for trout when I lived in Colorado when I was a kid, and now a little of everything, but I love fishing muskies. Have been tying trout flies since I was 8, and have always tinkered with poppers, gliders, jerk baits. Only recently have I started fooling with cranks, but learning quick from guys like fatfingers and others.

As far as jobs go, I've done a little of everything while being in school: carpentry, farming, pesticide application, bus driver, real estate, etc... I studied for eight years to be a pastor, did it for a year, and the stress was too much, so now my graduate school education is being put to good use as I drive truck across the country

I don't post much, not because I want to be selfish with knowledge, but because there are guys on here who have done all the things that I am still trying and have already learned from the mistakes. Thanks for all the great advice and all the great attitudes on this site, it is by far the most friendly forum that I have seen on the internet, and there are some GREAT minds on here.

My name is John, I'm 28 and from New Hampshire where there are 2 great seasons of bass fishing. (open water and hardwater) I'm a Electrician by trade but now am a Safety Manager for a electrical contractor, which makes me think a little more when I am pouring HOT plastics. I've been bass fishing since I could cast a pole. I have always been interested in making baits and catching fish off of stuff I've made. Two years ago I decided to try and have been having success and fun ever since. I'm working on a plastic bait that has been very successful out of a RTV mold that I made and I haven't seen anything like it anywhere so far. As soon as I can figure out how to make a better mold to pour it easier I would like to share it with all of you. That may take some time though. I'm very thankful for TU and all the participants on this site because I've learned a lot here and would like to someday help somebody else out there with a dream. Keep it real and RIPLIP!

Hello. My name is Russell Clawson and I live in north-central Indiana. I am just getting into the lure building hobby. I just finished my first buzz baits today! I am also working on some hard baits and looking into an air brush and compressor. This site is great and the level of talent here is awesome. First class. I will have lots of questions and few answers for a while but given some time I hope to contribute as well. Thanks for inspiring me as I start this hobby.
