Bucktail Tying Tips-Too Thick

Made my first bucktails.Using a method of adding tail to the left, right,top, and bottom and tying each seperate.Ties are too thick.

Can any of you guys give me some suggestions on neater,slimer ties

Are you tying to jigs with collars???? Try heads with no collars. Use pleanty of Head Cement.

Try tying top and bottom only.

The bucktail should pull around what you are tying to and it will take less wraps.

Maybe use a finer thread if you can find one strong enough.

Wraps have to be fairly tight.

Thread size playes into how the final product looks and how long it will last. Size "E" is almost the same thinkness of braided lines, while size "A" is much thinner. Kevlar Thread allows maximum thread pressure and is how to get tightly packed hair jigs.

Please dont think I'm being a smart **se here but try less hair in each bunch, it is an easy temptation to overdoo bucktail as it is a very heavy hair and you dont need a lot. Also use very high quality hair, the best you can get as this will be straighter and have less tendancy to flare. Bruce is right here get yourself some kevlar tying thread, you cannot break this thread and although high in diameter you only need 2 turns per bunch of hair. Let the hair spin round the shank with the first turn of thread and then lock it in place with the second turn. One of the beauties of bucktail is it is a fast tie. Here is an idea which works well, when you get near to the last wrap, tie in 3 or 4 sword tips from a genetic cape, it really finishes off the bucktail nicely, I don't know if it makes any difference to the fish but it looks the part .

here's a tip.... don't wrap down too tight on the treads at first and use your thumb to spread the bucktail out, after you spread it, wrap it tight.I've seen people do a bucktail in 2 clumps of bucktail.

Hi Saltyross,

I agree with Phil here. Personally I prefer a flat thread. I use 'big fly thread'. It's very strong and it's flat. Also use lots of head cement after each bunch of hair you tie in. Don't tie in big bunches at ones.

Saltyross,big jigs-rod wraping tread and I use nail polish...if anyone's got asthma, be very carefull around the head cement

Practice and use what works for you, all the comments you get are great and will work but you will develop your own style with time. Personally I tye with large flat nylon thread and one clump for each colour of bucktail I want with a solid knot and very little cement. I get small collars with what most would say is too much bucktail but it works for me.
