I tried to take the pattern from the parrot colored Rapala Risto Rap, which is very popular crank in my area. Here is the second one: this one is my "bullhead" pattern. You never have to worry about the collar slipping, only drawback is you can't change skirts without cutting the other off. I'm convinced the skirt has better action tied over collars. I agree with Basskat, tying jigs with thread over the use of the collar is the way to go IMHO. POP: I actually bought the jigheads from Brovarney Baits out of wisconsin. Pop Posted January 15, 2008 Report Share Posted January 15, 2008 I don't use weed guards very much as I think they hamper the hook set. I need to play around with some plain wire for a guard that will allow me to set the hook easier than with the standard multi strand guards. I usually pour and then twist off the excess lead where the guard would have been, then file it smooth. I have been looking for a swim bait mold that doesn't have the custom price tag. The bullet jig could be the answer. It looked so much nicer from the picutures you posted than the idea I could get from the catalogs. Thanks again. But, I just bought the bullet head bass mold to start pouring my own heads. Unfortunatly, Brovarney Baits deal with Gamakatsu doesn't allow them to just sell the custom made Gamakatsu swimjig hooks. rr316 Posted January 15, 2008 Report Share Posted January 15, 2008 Stream you might want to rethink pouring your own, that Mustad hook that is available for those molds (32886) is not really a swim jig hook, it is way to thick and will hamper your hookset. I know Brovarney use to use hook hangers or whatever they are but really stepped up there game with that new Gammie hook. I believe it takes a run of over 20,000 hooks to get that hook made so it was a considerable investment. I have played for 2 years with pouring my own swim jigs and have never been happy with the end result. Now the only thing in my boat thats not made by me (besides crankbaits) is swim jigs, until I can afford a run of 20,000 hooks it will stay that way also. It says it is more of a light wire hook. I ordered the 4/0 model. It should be at my house today. I will be pouring this weekend. I will try to post my results. If you are looking to get swim jigs from Brovarney, keep in mind that you could also order from me. I can get the Brovarney head and make any pattern you are looking for.....just a thought. Take a 1/8" base pin, use a hack saw to cut a small portion of the end off, and put the pin in. In other words, you make the end of the base pin flush with the jig head so it doesn't leave a hole; does that make any sense at all?
