Life-sized wood carvings

Recommended Posts

I met with my grandpa today and he unloaded all of his old whittling stuff because his wrist hurt him too much to carve. He has always impressed me with his abilities, he carved ducks, loons, christ statues, and people doing various actions and I was immediately hooked. The first thing I thought of was carving fish out of mahogany. Then I could paint them and they could almost be like taxidermied fish. Has anyone tried this before?

I have been tinkering with this for some time now.I do alot of carving on drift wood(all bass of course)and relief carving.I have one in the curio that a friend at work done for me before I got into it,he carved the bass and I mounted it to drift wood with a dowel drilled into the bottom. It is facing down and I put a crawfish under it,as if to be eaten.I have one carved out of a curved piece,I took a jig saw and cut around it but left it attatched in two spots.I saw a Trout carved out of an Elk horn for the idea.I'll take some pics tomorrow and post.....Robert

The ones below were done by a good friend at work who carves indians, civil war soldiers, wizards, and canes. He just got me interested in it so I thought I would try.The bass he done was when he first started and it was his first fish so he was a little critical about it.He carved it and I mounted it on the drift wood. You may be like my wife(she hates the indians he does, says they look creepy)but I thought I would throw it in.I've tried to buy it ever since he finished it,it was kinda high but I would have bought it.He had his carvings at a store. This winter I seen him and he gave it to me.
