was wonder where you guys, that do your own tying, get your tools and supplies from. I know NetCraft and Barlows sells tying tools & materials. Are there other sources for the "budget" minded tying that maybe worth checking out also?

It depends on how fast you want/need it. As a rule, Stamina has pretty good prices and normally have what I want; however, I put my order together using their online ordering and print it out. I only conduct my business with on line and a confirmation of the status as I order - I hate surprises and delays.
I am lucky in that I live within 30 miles of both a Cabela's and Bass Pro Shop, so if I can find it on line, I will call ahead to see that it is actually in stock - did I mention I hate surprises and delays. Anytime I am getting ready to place an order, I check the web at my regular places and launch searches on specific items to find new sources and the best prices. I don't see that changing. #3Posted 17 March 2008 - 06:33 PM
I tie many orders of 50+ dozen jigs. I order most of my supplies from
Hareline. Their email is hareline@hareline.com phone#1-800-448-9966. Happy tying. dj #4Posted 17 March 2008 - 06:38 PM
Your lucky, the nearest Cabela's is about 4hrs away and the neasest BPS is about 3.5hrs away. And with gas prices going up, I do 99% of my shopping online. I may have to pay a little more for the shipping, but it's just getting too expensive to drive any long distance any more
And unfortunately, other then the near by Walmart, we don't have much for tackle shops in my next of the woods Fishing isn't a big sport in N.W., IA ... mainly Bow/Gun hunting. And Fly shops ... Forget. So I really depending on finding the best deals online and do my research before making a purchase. I did find some good vises on Cabela's site so I may end up picking one of those up but also been looking for anyone that maybe selling "hand me downs". Found some really good deals on the FAOL website forum for a whole bunch of tying materials for about $25 Mike #5Posted 18 March 2008 - 03:53 AM
I have been using all the above mentioned, plus a couple more.
Tackle-craft (715-723-3645) out of WI. They are mail order, they can send you a catalog. Nice people and fast delivery. anglersworkshop.com is another, also fast shipping and reasonable. #6Posted 18 March 2008 - 05:14 AM
thanks. I've heard of Tackle Craft before but couldn't find any info about them. they don't have a web site ?
Mike #7Posted 18 March 2008 - 06:13 AM
No website, you'll have to call that #, they will send catalog.
Kind of like the old-fashioned way, but it's kinda nice. This is for tackle-craft 715-723-3645, they are out of Chippewa Falls #8Posted 18 March 2008 - 06:17 AM
Ha!

Catalog is free and shipping rates are normal, never really checked on that.
I talked with a lady several times when ordering and they are very pleasant to deal with. Hopefully you'll have the same experience. #10Posted 18 March 2008 - 06:37 AM
Ok, thanks for the info, got their number written down. surprised they don't have toll-free number for mail ordering.

Isn't Tackle Craft a part of Falls Bait Company of Chippewa Falls, WI? Falls does not have a web site, but they still make one of the best crappie jigs I've ever fished with.

Just a couple of other thoughts on tools...
You would do well to visit a local "Big Box" department store like Wal-Mart or Meijer. Visit their cosmetics department. Another possibility is to visit a Walgreens drug store. You can buy such tools as tweezers and scissors that are of pretty good quality actually. Sally Hansen and Sally Hansen LaCross scissors come to mind. Kiss Red and Tweezerman tweezers are pretty good too. A good substitute for head cement is Sally Hansen's "Hard as Nails". However, do not overlook other nail polish (NP) clearcoat sealers such as Rimmel 60-Second or Wet-N-Wild invisibles. Hobby Lobby will sell a fine-point paper punch tool that works adequately as a dubbing needle, but shines as a pick for hair that is overwrapped with thread and needs to be pulled out from under your wrap(s). Kiss makes an excellent 4-second super glue (Maximum Speed nail glue) that, at times , can be purchased at two .11-ounce bottles for the price of one (about $1.89}. Meijer and Walgreens carry it in my area. #13Posted 19 March 2008 - 01:30 PM
Yea, I found those some of the stuff at our local Walmart, my daughter is a dept., mgr., there so I get nice discount
I found another good site for Tying vises, tools, threads and tying materials: Hook and Hackle and their prices & S/H charges pretty reasonable. Mike #14Posted 19 March 2008 - 03:02 PM
You can use J. Stockard JS Fly Fishing: Rod Building Supplies, Fly Tying Materials their pretty good.
Living in Iowa with all that hunting check with your buddies and get all the tail feathers you can and a few skins, and use a few for trading material. Don't know if you have partridge or similar type bird out there but these skins ain't cheap to buy. Learn how to scrape the fat and guts and clean and wash the skins and borax them till dry and you'd have more material for use and trading. For other furs and feathers you can try Moscow Hide and Fur hideandfur.com - Moscow Hide and Fur Coffin Creek Fur Fly Tying Furs, Home of Coffins Creek Furs - We Buy, Sell, and Process Fly Tying Furs and Feathers There's lots of places but hang out at a few tying boards and you'll pick up lot's of them. When you get to buying hackle and are shocked at the price of Whiting try Conranch Hackle Conranch Fly Tying Hackle and if you're not sure what hackle you need call Denny the owner and tell him what you're tying and he'll tell you what you need. I buy everything mailorder. Pick up a copy of a good magazine like "Flyfishing and Tying Journal. Lots of on line stores listed. Some I have bought from WWW.Anglersworkshop.com (Master Vise $25.65) THE FLY SHOP and JS Fly Fishing: Rod Building Supplies, Fly Tying Materials. There are lots of others. Always looking for new materials and ideas.

thanks a bunch, some good sites. Do you happen to know what size hooks that Master vise will handle ... will it handle up to #3/0 ?

You could e-mail them and ask. It probably would take a 3/0. Most of the high price vises are for tying small flies down to 20. Big hooks usually work good in the cheap vises.
#18Posted 23 March 2008 - 12:01 PM
Yea, I've noticed the same thing about hook sizes. Don't want to spend a ton on vise that won't handle the large hook sizes. The master vise is in my budget range. I contact and see what hook sizes it handles.
thx's again, Mike #19Posted 27 March 2008 - 06:05 PM
What is the best place to get feathers?
#20Posted 28 March 2008 - 06:12 PM
ummm Birds.
Sorry I could not resist. Mud hole Is a good spot. I like to get mine localy so I can see what I am getting. You wont ever go wrong with Cochrans Hackles though and if there is ever a buisiness that provides a role model for customer service it is them. |
